Natura Artis Magistra (Latin for "Nature is the teacher of art"), commonly known just as Artis (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɑrtɪs]), is a zoo and botanical garden in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and fifth oldest zoo in the world.
In addition to the zoo, Artis also contains an aquarium, a planetarium, an arboretum, Micropia, and the Groote Museum. A part of the art collection is on display in the aquarium building of the zoo. Artis contains 27 historically significant (listed) buildings, bridges, and ponds, most of which are still used as animal enclosures.
Wasn't sure what to expect when going here, had read a lot of good reviews and this place certainly did not disappoint! There was not only the zoo but also the microorganism museum, both of which were fab! This is definitely somewhere you could spend a full day. There is so much to see and such a fantastic variety and lots of opportunities to get up close with the animals. The cafe here is also very nice and serves some really tasty food. The staff were faultless, very friendly and welcoming. This was one of my highlights of Amsterdam for sure.

An absolute highlight to my trip to Amsterdam! Boasts an impressive range of animals who all seem healthy and well cared for. The zoo is incredible clean and staffed by a helpful, pleasant team. Easily spent 4 hours here so maybe keep that in mind if your planning your day. Good facilities and a fair priced gift shop Easy to get to via the tram systems or a simple 30 minute walk from the central train station.

So many animals! This place Is huge and a gem hidden within Amsterdam. Crazy to think all those birds are just flying around that small part of the city. The Aquarium has a big collection as well. Well worth the trip and well worth the fee. Close to the Botanical gardens too so you can do both in one day

Have always had a weird experience with Zoos in the UK. This was completely different . Animals actually seem stimulated and well looked after. We were there for a good 6 hours too which makes it fantastic value for money. Cafe was really nice too. Lots of choice and good healthy options too. Highly recommended!!!

A must do in Amsterdam. Probably one of the best things to do if you have kids is to visit this zoo. It is well maintained and very informative. The landscape is spectacular as shown in the pictures. The collection is a bit small but definitely worth it.

Great feeling to see that the animals are being respected to the level possible. The zoo is constantly Changing in order to offer more space and comfort to them. Of course its all a zoo.. Though for a little escape of reality it's ideal and almost in the centre of the city. Very easy to access. The prices are very high though making it difficult for some people to get the experience. I understand the need for that though.

A placer full of growing life everywhere, delightful animals and bacteria, colorful whenever you look. Price is decent and everything is well explained both in Dutch and English. I like the most the bacteria museum, extremely interesting to see how those ways of life fight for surviving in that tiny scale ! Staff was very kind as well.

If you can get past the guilt of it being a zoo, this one appears to be excellent. The animals seem well cared for (but what would we know really? ), the layout is great and the staff are fantastic. We spent four rainy hours with two three year olds here and there was enough in the butterfly house, insect house, tropical house, aquarium etc etc to keep us dry and interested. If I as in Amsterdam again with the kids I'd go back - good value.

A really good zoo. We spent hours walking around and got to see all of the animals. The staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. The aquarium is great and also gives shelter on a rainy day. The cafe has a good choice of food and the zoo is laid out so that you get a good view of everything. One of the best things to see in Amsterdam

This zoo is amazing, compared to American zoos. There are lots of exhibits to check out, you could spend half a day here. The aquarium and monkey exhibits we're especially impressive! Loved the lemurs and the sloth! You get to see the animals up really close... With guidance nearby. Highly recommend!!

A very well kept and diverse zoo. The exhibits are well later out and it’s a perfect place to spend half a day in Amsterdam. You won’t even believe that you’re still in the city. Great for a romantic day out or a family adventure or even just strolling solo.

Really nice little zoo, I was happy to see most of the animals needing large enclosures had them. The cafe near the giraffes was simple but good and it’s on the canal so it was lovely to be able to sit on the water and watch the giraffes too. Come at the right time in spring and the gardens are beautiful and full of flowers.

I've been coming here for the past 6 years on an almost weekly basis with son. He loves it. It's great for people from all ages, make sure to come early if the weather is nice or queue for quite some time to get tickets (or buy online). The new areas of the elephants and jaguars are great. Some animals really deserve a larger area, like the lions, and some areas are a worn out. Areas a bit out of sight but very worthwile: aquarium and small mammal house with lots of monkeys.

A wonderful entourage of animals from all over the world. Everything from mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians. This place has all the big ticket animals like elephants and giraffes. Even the tiny, blue poison dart frogs. Alongside the zoo is a museum of microbiology, this has a separate admission price not included with the main zoo. I would highly recommend visiting this place as it is great for all ages.

This place is gorgeous. It is an AMAZING place to view all the local -and exotic- animals spread around in a huge zoo. There is a great range of animals such as zebras, elephants, lions, and much more. My only complaint is that, if i remember correctly, there is only one food source. However, this placce is great and you should definitely go there.

This zoo is amazing! My group was myself, a lady my age, and her young daughter. We all found ARTIS to be a wonderful place, and we each found exhibits of animals we liked. There are panthers, beavers, vultures, sea lions, penguins, capybaras, penguins...it’s the best zoo I’ve ever seen! The animals appear content and some were even curious about their human guests, so I feel a great appreciation for the work and love that went into making ARTIS a reality! Keep up the good work! I know a happy elephant family when I see one! Those prairie dogs are a hoot!

Spend a full day - or more, just wandering around this zoo. Plenty to see for everyone and plenty of seating all around the zoo so you can relax as often as you wish. A play area for children to burn off some energy while you relax and have some decent/good snacks. We spent 8 hours there without getting bored. You could also go in Micro piano and spend quite a time there.

It is a fantastic zoo with lots of animals to see in my haste the elephants and their giraffes are the best ones on show. I also have a reptile as well we can see all different snakes and lizards and Iguanas which is very cool apart from the fact I don't like snakes :-) we went early in the morning about 9:30 as the weather was extremely hot and we wanted to see all the animals before they got too hot it wasn't very busy but two walls meet day it's got busy with school kids on school trips having a good time. We booked our tickets through their official website as it was cheaper it was easy to do we just showed our phone to the lady on the gate who scanned our tickets

This zoo has a lot of animals ! That may be obvious but when ever we took a corner we discovered something new. We recently visited Berlin zoo, and I think this is a better place. More to see and it's a bit more spacious. The "monkey house" and butterfly house is really worth the visit. You get to walk among the animals with the butterflies circling around you. Or you have to be mindful not to step on an iguana. Would recommend this place.
Thor LemmingerJun 30, 2018
Love the jungle house, if you're lucky you can pose with the sloth. The coffee is the best I had in Amsterdam, oddly enough. The price is a little steep for a tiny cup, but it was much needed. The petting zoo needs more goats but to me everywhere is better with more goats. Please put bottle openers in the gift shop, we needed one and we wanted to support the zoo.
Victoria June BateJun 18, 2018
Very nice setting by old architecture and the canals, the ARTIS zoo clearly has a professional staff and management. All facilities are clean and well maintained. There is a large variety of animals. The enclosures allow for a nice viewing experience. And the animals seem well taken care of as many of them were active and playful. I recommend the zoo for families or for anyone who enjoys a nice day experiencing animals from around the world in a top notch facility.
David CusumanoAug 5, 2018
An extensive zoo with a great variety of animals. Also includes an aquarium and planetarium. There are a couple of cafes on-site or near by. Wander for a couple of hours. Eat. And then wander some more. Can easily fill a day. Great place for kids. I docked one star because the penguins (even with their very cute condos, accentuating their life-time monogamy) really need fresher and more water. Other than that, the animals seemed well-cared for and happy.
Aaron DanielsAug 14, 2018
ARTIS is one of the best zoo's I've ever been to. We attended during some of the hottest days of the year and had a great time! The birds were definitely a massive highlight, especially their expansive collection of Macaws and other parrots! The staff were very friendly and there were volunteers on hand ready to answer questions and show interesting features of exhibits! Definitely worth the pricey entry for any animal lover. Just make sure to get there early in the day as there is a lot to see!
Nicki LoBuglioAug 17, 2018
I had a fantastic day at the artis zoo. I paid around 20 € for a day ticket, unfortunately the student discount only applies to Dutch students. The zoo is quite worth the money though, the architecture is beautiful and they have a lot of animals. I particularly enjoyed the bird and money houses, the animals roam free there and you walk right through their habitat. There’s a lot of nature within the zoo so it’s pretty much a huge park. There’s also a petting zoo where they have a couple of cows, pigs, goats and chickens. We spent around 6 hours roaming the park and saw everything.

Well designed and interesting zoo with lots to see packed into a fairly small but somehow spacious area. Liked that you can get close to so many of the animals without oppressive h&s measures, but cages are thoughtfully designed and safe for children. Suggest at least half a day to get the most out of it but could spend all day here. Number of food options serving decent items that actually looked pretty healthy overall. Also can picnic if you prefer. Note if you have very small children/babies It's worth bringing your own food as we couldn't find much suitable for a baby; our fault for forgetting to pack something though. There are some unusual animals to see such as African hunting dogs, vultures and sloths. The swimming elephant area is great if they are in the water as you can get really close views.

The enclosures allow for a nice viewing experience. And the animals seem well taken care of as many of them were active and playful. I recommend the zoo for families or for anyone who enjoys a nice day experiencing animals from around the world in a top notch facility.
