The Vondelpark is a public urban park of 47 hectares (120 acres) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is part of the borough of Amsterdam-Zuid and situated west from the Leidseplein and the Museumplein. The park was opened in 1865 and originally named Nieuwe Park (English: New Park), but later renamed Vondelpark, after the 17th-century playwright and poet Joost van den Vondel. The park has around 10 million visitors annually. Within the park is an open-air theatre, a playground and several food service facilities.
In 1864 a group of citizens led by Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen established the Vereeniging tot Aanleg van een Rij- en Wandelpark (English: Association for the Construction of a Park for Riding and Walking). They bought several hectares of grass-land and marshes at the rim of the city of Amsterdam, in order to create the new park. They assigned its design to the architect Jan David Zocher, and in 1865 "Het Nieuwe Park" (English: "The New Park") was opened free for members of the association and with other citizens paying an entrance fee.

Very beautiful park which appears to also be dog friendly; at least judging from all the people playing with their dogs. Even though we visited it winter, the park was still gorgeous; birds hang out on the ice, it's a very nice view. The cafe/bar was open, so we sat down by the water and had a coffee. The queues are big and it might be a bit hard to get a spot, butt it moves fast.

The Amsterdam city park par excellence! Nice views and varied paths. Increasingly busy and the negotiation between people on bike and on feet is becoming an issue. Nonetheless this park is offering space to many outdoor activities, in particular sports.

I loved this place from the first moment. It’s so beautiful and wherever you choose to chill is absolutely amazing. I would recommend it during spring and summer. It’s nice to take some food and go eat by the lake with a nice book !

Magical Park, safe during the day, mostly at night but be careful. Lots of love was put into this park! Beautiful during winter, absolutely stunning during spring!!!!

I wandered through here on a Saturday night and came across a 10K that was getting ready to start. Everyone seemed to be having a really great time. Otherwise, the rest of the park was quite busy with lots of bike and pedestrian traffic. It'd been raining and it would have been nice if there were signs indicating which paths might be/were flooded. Great park for a stool, run, or biking adventure!

We visited at the end of winter so it was not filled with people. It is a nice place to walk. A couple of fun playgrounds for the kids to play on as well. You may have to search a bit for the wooden fort as it is obscured by the trees.

Think New York’s Central Park but on a smaller scale and flatter and you’ve got the essence of the place. It may lack some of the imaginative layout and planting of its American counterpart but it’s a very charming place nonetheless. There are small lakes with cafes, rollerbladers and of course hundreds of cyclists en route to somewhere or other or just cycling round the perimeter. We did wonder if the public minded founders of Central Park had been at least a little influenced by this place given its obvious if more modest similarities.

This is a place that every major city should have. Here you can do everything, starting form having a picnic with your friends, to jogging and taking your kids. Very big park with lots of different green zones. Also it is a perfect spot to ride a bike. Would definitely come back to Amsterdam solely for the park!

Love this park especially in the summer time on warmer days. Nice place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Lots of nature around and a good place to have a picnic.

A very large and beautiful park in the southwest part of Amsterdam. It’s full of trails, ponds, canals, open spaces, sporting areas, and even a couple restaurants. It wasn’t high on my priority list of places to visit when I was planning my trip, but I ended up going back several times to relax and enjoy the weather. Speaking of, this park gets very busy if the weather is nice with people having picnics, playing games, strolling, and relaxing. Whether you have 30 minutes or 3 hours, I would recommend spending a little time exploring the park and getting some outdoor time.

Beautiful place, especially in the spring or summer. The park is huge and warm enough to sit around and enjoy a picnic, and is lined with tulip and cherry blossoms around the perimeter of the park which give it a great view. Easily accessible from both ends via metro or tram, with an underground supermarket on the western end. If you're visiting and have trash, please carry it with you as most trash cans are probably overflowing

Pretty park. Not too big so one can stroll the whole park at leisure. Grass that people can sit/lie on. Pretty views.

Big park with a good atmosphere. Perfect for relaxing after a day in the city. You find restaurants and opportunities for drinking. Sometimes live bands and other activities on one of the stages. Good for do some sports and outdoor activities.

Beautiful park. Fantastic place to take a walk even on a cold winter day. Watch out for the crazy bicyclists though...like the rest of Amsterdam

Awesome park to go spend an afternoon, pool for small kids, running, cycling. Will definitely get crowded on a sunny day, people will bring tents, do barbecues, wine and cups, even inflatable chairs. Has many entries and seems hidden, doesn't become immediately clear how big it is.

One of my favorite parks in Amsterdam. Great for running or cycling when it’s not crowded. Plenty of green space for a picnic or just relaxing on a nice day. Does get very crowded when the sun is shining and can be very touristy.

One of the best, out of all the many parks in Amsterdam. Big enough to go for a good run/bike ride! . No BBQ allowed though

Very very cool park. Amsterdam is full of life, and its partly due to its great parks, and this is a great example. full of little canals and lakes and green ares, this is just perfect to hang around and take strolls when it's not raining

A bustling metropolitan park, walking, cycling, enjoying the warm summer afternoon. We setttled down to paint a water color and were amazed how many people stopped by to see or ofter a kind word of encouragement. The park is easy to find and feels safe and hospitable.

Its very nice to sit in the park and enjoy a drink or some snacks. Its big enough that even with so so so many tourists it never seems too full. Running or going for a nice walk is always possible!!

Visited this park twice during my stay in Amsterdam. Has a great balance of wild nature and maintained garden. The rose garden hidden in the central part of the park was beautiful, as well as fountains in the numerous ponds of the park. Stay alert of the birds in the garden though as they sense any food-related activity and will follow you from there on. :D Highly recommend to visit for a nice walk, running, bicycling or a picnic!

Amazing to cycle through and there's plenty of grass and benches to sit on. Also cycled through at midnight on a weekday and there were lots of people around. Very nice atmosphere, so much wildlife. Definitely a place to visit .

It’s a nice park. I just didn’t like the cigarette buds everywhere and the garbage music coming from a wannabe gangster high school drop-out’s phone speaker.

I really enjoyed my walks in Vondelpark. There are lots of other dogs here and plenty of space to run. I saw duck in the ponds and even one rabbit! People are friendly and don't mind if I come close to them - they stroke me a lot! A very relaxing place indeed - Snow, Polish Mountain Sheepdog

What a relaxing Park! We decided to have a walk around here before leaving Amsterdam. It took out the "tourist stress" with the people enjoying the sun, nature, and even a small performance that harmonizes with the park. Glad we took the moment to enjoy this park along with the locals. It's a must to check visit.

Lovely place to chill, skate or walk with the dogs and to get away from the shopping and partying crowd in the city center. You're welcome to have a picnic but please, as a courtesy to the next people visiting, clean up your trash when you leave.

Beautiful park, especially on a sunny day. One can do yoga, meditation, jog, picnic or just chill out with a book. Keep in mind there are no public toilets and cafes nearby are pricey. All in all another great attraction in Amsterdam, nice to visit either on a weekend or a weekday.
