Fernbank Museum of Natural History, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a museum that presents exhibitions and programming about natural history. Fernbank Museum has a number of permanent exhibitions and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions in its expansive facility, designed by Graham Gund Architects. Giants of the Mesozoic, on display in the atrium of Fernbank Museum, features a 123-foot (37 m) long Argentinosaurus, the largest dinosaur ever classified; as well as a Giganotosaurus. The permanent exhibition, A Walk Through Time in Georgia, tells the twofold story of Georgia's natural history and the development of the planet. Fernbank Museum has won several national and international awards for one of its newest permanent exhibitions, Fernbank NatureQuest, an immersive, interactive exhibition for children that was designed and produced by Thinkwell Group. The awards NatureQuest has won include the 2012 Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement for a Museum Exhibit and the 2011 Bronze Award for Best Museum Environment from Event Design. The nearby Fernbank Science Center is a separate organization operated by the DeKalb County Board of Education and is not affiliated with Fernbank Museum of Natural History (Fernbank, Inc.).
In the late 1800s, a nature-lover named Emily Harrison grew up in an area east of Atlanta which she called "Fernbank". Along with others, Harrison created a charter for Fernbank in 1938 and purchased the 70 acres (280,000 m2) of woodland on which Fernbank Museum now stands. In 1964, the Fernbank trustees and the DeKalb County School System created Fernbank Science Center, which led to a desire to share Fernbank's resources with the general public.
A lovely place for families with children. We have been members here for 3 years. The rotating exhibit and the interactive nature of the spaces keep it a worthwhile place to visit regularly. Special events are typically fun for children and quite busy. The quieter days are great for spending more time in the play spaces. Free parking and allowing outside food (in certain areas) are extras that make it awesome.

This place is so amazing! It is very clean. Huge! So much to see inside and outside is like a huge playground. Natural environment and so much to see and do! I would get a membership if I lived in Georgia! There is a beautiful playground a few Hills away. We walked there and played in the leaves and on the playground!

Im almost tempted to give four stars but just didn’t fee this one meets that level. A nice museum, beautiful architectural design with exhibits- a great place to learn about Georgia’s natural history. Loved the dinosaur exhibits and this is a great place to come with kids (which I do not have) but even adults find interesting things but not what I expected overall. Tickets are a bit overpriced and even the people working there could not tell us where to start. One employee said just start on this floor. We did then went upstairs then down the outside where there were nice displays and a kids play area. There just was not good flow or directions and some displays just were not the quality I expected. We did not try the restaurant because there were so many kids but I did see some families appeared to have brought their own food which is nice.

Excellent place to visit with kids. Their 4D and 2D movies are excellent and thought provoking. Great outdoor walking place a long with indoor treasures for all ages. I would highly recommend anyone with children to visit this place. The elderly man and the young girl who works at the theater are very friendly and take their time to explain the things to everyone. Keep them there forever.

Stunning place. Filled with nature's lost and alive at the same place. Able to feed the fanatics of dinosaurs in a pleasant way. More importantly you can learn so much more about the animals featured it mesmerizing. Go to the children's museum and experience the sound vessel so interesting you will be surprised. It's a lot to take in. However with you and your partner or family you will have a memorable day in this museum. Visit the shop as well. They have many things that might interest you. Most importantly it's a day well spent.

Great museum. Current exhibits. Very family friendly. Excellent areas for younger kids too. Membership prices very reasonable and parking is free and easy. We have been three times and my children occupy themselves in just one exhibit area until it's time to go.... that is how good the one exhibit is on the third floor. We have also gone to the outside exhibit area and enjoyed that as well. Highly recommend.

Very fun place. Good for families with children. There is a fun little play area for younger kids. Went mainly to see the Microbe exhibit during an adult night beer tasting. Was a great time with many different things to see. There is also a section that has a bunch of hands on displays showing off different illusions and visual trickery.

Great museum, especially for the forest! I think this is more properly characterized as a science museum, rather than a natural history museum! The exhibits were excellent, and appropriate for kids and adults. As two adults visiting this, there were so many school children! More than any other museum I’ve been to! We were a bit overwhelmed at times, but went slow as needed. We spent most of our time in the woods, checking out nature and the cool giant houses that the property seems built into!

Lots of fun and lots to see. Allison was very helpful with our questions. Loved learning about fossils from Georgia's past. The outside walking area was great for burning off some energy with the kids. Recommended!

Everything perfect. There's a lady named Cristhina, who greets in line, she's a museum employee, and this lady is extremely polite, sweet, sweet and gentle. She made our day happier and more enjoyable, we were sure that the visit at the museum would be perfect because her care was wonderful. The cleanliness of the place is great. Well trained staff. All very well explained. Part of the children very good! Thanks so much !

This is a beautiful museum inside and outside. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and there are walking paths outside the museum that lead to the surrounding forest and also exhibits that the museum has set up. Many exhibits and activities on these trails that adults and children enjoy. Inside of museum is wonderful. The lobby opens up into a glass roofed atrium with huge dinosaur skeleton. Phenomenal! Museum also has 2 gift shops and a cafe. Wonderful place to easily spend hours in for adults and children.

Good place for kids! Pros: The employees are super helpful and informative, our 4- and 5-year-old kids were able to participate in a very hands-on hour-long chemistry demonstration which was fascinating. Not all of the exhibits are specifically kid-friendly just because they are more for an adult comprehension level, but the museum definitely caters to children and the indoor and outdoor kids' areas are a lot of fun. We purchased a year membership the first time we visited because we have a family of 6, and for the price of us to go again within a year, it would have been cheaper to just get the membership. I highly recommend doing that. Cons: I wish the museum were open longer, it closes at 5 p.m. THE FOOD IS HORRIBLE. My husband ordered a barbecue sandwich and it was pretty flavorless, he also got nacho chips with cheese for my kids, the chips were painfully salty and the cheese was just flavorless goop. It was the quality of what you would purchase at a low-budget concession stand at a high school football game. Strangely enough, there is no changing table on the first floor of the museum. A woman who was cleaning the bathroom told me to put my child on the counter next to the sinks to change her. I thought that seemed pretty unpleasant for the people who had to wash their hands while I was changing a poopy diaper, on top of there being nothing for me to strap my daughter to the counter with since it is not intended to be a changing table. It's not a huge inconvenience, I think there is a changing table on the second floor, just don't expect to come in from the playground to change a diaper unless you want to do it the way I did or go up a level. As we were leaving there was another family talking to an employee, trying to figure out how to change their baby's diaper on the first floor. 😂

You should definitely visit this cute museum with children. Maybe not great for adults, but kids will love the hands-on learning centers and programs they have to offer. The dinosaur skeletons are so cool and the indoor playground is incredible! Outdoor nature trails and rope playgrounds/playhouses were fun and beautiful as well.

We had our prom here and it was awesome! The huge dinosaur in the middle of the room really made things special and it was set up very pretty. Multiple rooms were open for seating and viewing and it is just an overall very gorgeous museum. I highly recommend visiting. Great place for kids as well!

Love this place. They added wonderful live animals and the out side is a wonderful addition with the eye max theater. The next part they need to renew is the sensory room. I use to love playing there as a child but seeing the old stations that I loved not working makes me really sad. Hopefully they can renew it soon.

My BF and I spent the afternoon here. It was his first time but my fourth. We absolutely enjoyed ourselves! The facility is very clean and the exhibits are well made and designed. The IMAX is nice and we both enjoyed the quality. It is the perfect place for a day trip, school field trip, and totally family friendly. The cafe is nice as well. There is also an outdoor forest that teaches you about the natural environment of Georgia and some fun playgrounds for kids.

Expensive admission tickets (unless you are a local and get a membership), but it's definitely worth it! Our kids are 8 and 10 and enjoyed the outdoor play areas a lot! After that, we had a long walk in the forest (what a fantastic opportunity, to walk inside a Georgia forest without the risk of running into wild animals, yet still being delighted by squirrels and birds of all kinds!), and then had lunch in their large Cafe' - you can bring your own food or purchase there; they also have kids' menus. Our kids also LOVED the 'Nature Quest' area and the 'Sensing Nature' area, both on the upper level. We stayed at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History from 10 am to 4 pm, and our kids would have stayed even longer! Definitely recommend for children of all ages, and adults as well!

Excellent place for kids to learn. A lot to look at. The nature trail is awesome. The cafe is expensive and average food. Be prepared to bring packed lunches if you have a big family. $26 for two subs...drink and small bag of chips. The cafe staff didn't speak very much. Couldn't find the menu. But this is a super nice place overall and it's definitely worth the trip. Kids will LOVE it!!!!! Prepare to walk but there's elevators too. Parking is excellent and free. There was a volunteer pianist in the cafeteria area. Very nice.

WOW!! So much to take in. If it's seldom visited plan a whole day from opening to closing. Good City Pass deals if your a tourist, great membership deals that pay off after two visits if you area resident. Always a good visiting exhibit to add new exploring opportunities and enough detail to visit multiple times and always learn more. Even the fossil tile floors are fascinating. Definitely have to see at least 1 of the IMAX movies or both if it's a very rare visit. The new outdoor trails are so beautiful, including some exquisite sculptural pieces in the elevated tree canopy boardwalk! A very fun engaging challenge course just outside for kids even as young as 3 to enjoy (although it says 9+). Great dining available or pack your own lunch and use their tables inside and out. The dinosaurs and wildlife replica exhibit are always a memorable walk through and the hands on science sensory area always a big hit too.

A lovely museum! Not too big; not too small! Lots of places for kids to interact with things! Fun for all ages. The outside areas were amazing. I loved the trails outback. Next time we head down to Georgia we will be back, if Not for the museum, at very least for the trails outback! Absolutely beautiful.

Very nice.

This was an excellent family vacation spot! It had something for everyone to enjoy! The kids loved the touch areas and the hands on experiments. We all loved the life sized models of dinosaurs, wildlife and cultural pieces. We didn't get to see the outside children journey area, because it rained on our visit, however it looked like it would have been alot of fun. The museum is very clean and we'll kept. It is an excellent spot for everyone in your family.
