The Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira (or simply the Auckland Museum) is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history. The present museum building was constructed in the 1920s in the neo-classicist style, and sits on a grassed plinth (the remains of a dormant volcano) in the Auckland Domain, a large public park close to the Auckland CBD.
Auckland Museum's collections and exhibits began in 1852. In 1867 Aucklanders formed a learned society – the Auckland Philosophical Society, later the Auckland Institute. Within a few years the society merged with the museum and Auckland Institute and Museum was the organisation's name until 1996. Auckland War Memorial Museum was the name of the new building opened in 1929, but since 1996 was more commonly used for the institution as well. From 1991 to 2003 the museum's Māori-language name was Te Papa Whakahiku.

We loved this museum!! The ticket is not cheap but it didn’t bother me after I realize that they don’t charge to NZ people, which I think is really good. It was our last day on Auckland and to be honest we have our suit cases with us, they gave us a box to put the suit cases while we visit the museum and it was free of charge. The museum is really big, have some temporal expositions as well so if you want you could spend 5-6 hours there and wouldn’t even notice when the time pass

Amazing experience I had there... I stayed there for 5 or 6 hours and i totally enjoyed my time... huge section with nature life, war history and everything you want to know about the old times of New Zealand and the modern history as well... I love history so this place was heaven for me... also they have the haka in live events with local natives performing and it was amazing... suck a nice atmosphere there everything inside is wonderful with a good store inside to buy everything you want from souvenirs and books... also the staff is very helpful and they providing anything you need to know about their facilities... you can spend the day there and enjoy the surrounded area outside the park as well... such I nice park there is there... absolutely amazing... P.S. I was amazed with the section they have about Greek history... so many things from my mother country and it was something that made me proud and sad at the same time...

This is one of my favourite places to go on Auckland. It's relaxing and not loud. Aucklanders can get a my museum card that gets them into the museum for free any time. Anyone else it's a donation entry. But 100% worth a go. Nice view over the city. Not to hard to get to also had parking if needed. And top level has a computer room that you can search the military records.

As another reviewer mentioned; entry is free for NZ residents but us overseas visitors are charged $25. However this unethical price structure is not unique to this attraction and there is a lot to see so I would say it is worth paying for entry. Spent over 3 hours and could have easily spent longer. Overall a nice place and would recommend to others to see!

I have been coming to this museum since I was a wee tot and I love that some bits have stayed the same (though now one particular display makes me feel old. Lol) but at the same time they're always working on updating and improving this iconic attraction.

Eclectic museum dealing with New Zealand's ethnic, natural and cultural heritage/history. Favourite part was easily the Weird & Wonderful section, it is wasted on the children! Nice cafe, shop and clean toilets create a nice atmosphere that makes you want to return. When I visited there was building work on going for future changes to the museum.

Great museum, lots to see and worth the price. This museum gives a excellent range of things to see about the culture, world war, volcanoes, etc. You can easily spend around 3-4 hours inside and still not be finished with everything. The tickets are free for Auckland residents so it was a bonus and even the general tickets are $25 so it was worth the day.

Great Museum which often has decent exhibitions. Very good wheelchair access once inside how ever the hills to get there can be an issue. The elevator in the car park was broken when we visited which meant I needed help to get to the main entrance

Just signed up with My Museum Card which will allow free entry to the museum going forward. If you are Auckland residence then take your utility bill or rates invoice and drivers License to prove your eligibility for this card. I usually visit 5-6 times a year and it's a great place to see and learn historical info and modern development. The new Butterfly exhibition is on at Level 2. The Air New Zealand historical show was one of my favourite. Parking fee for covered car park is reasonable.

Been here many times. Usually good customer service. Very easy to get in even if you're international. Great exhibits. I think my favourite is definitely the volcano exhibit. lots of information, very interactive with the rocks and awesome volcano simulation room! Also, it's in the most beautiful spot in Auckland.

Very informative museum. First, thank you to the staff at the museum. They were friendly and helpful. Second, parents bring your kids. It is very informative and is growing, with more exhibits planned for the near future. Easy to navigate with occasional benches and chairs for you to take a break. It is a large museum with multiple levels. You may not need the break but it is a nice option for those of us who do. At the time I was there, a special butterfly exhibit had recently opened. Another Great exhibit to bring the kids. The museum also includes a library, a cafe, and a coffee bar. All great assets to the building.

The Weird and Wonderful gallery is excellent for kids of all ages. Land and Origins galleries are also great. My 3.5 yr old found the volcano house simulator a bit scary but also had heaps of questions later. Great family day out

I have always loved going to the museum, and it has been years since my last visit, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is now a back entrance. They're renovating at the moment, so part of one of the floors is closed. But the areas that are open were excellent. I have always found the area that commemorate the fallen servicemen and women from Auckland powerfully emotional and am proud that the museum continue to honour them. Would recommend a visit to the museum to anyone.
