Auckland Zoo is a 16.35-hectare (40-acre) zoological garden in Auckland, New Zealand, situated next to Western Springs park not far from Auckland's central business district. It is run by the Auckland Council with the Zoological Society of Auckland as a supporting organisation.
Auckland Zoo opened in 1922 experiencing early difficulties mainly due to animal health issues. By 1930 a sizeable collection of animals had been assembled and a zoological society formed. The zoo consolidated during the Second World War and was at that time under the leadership of Lt. Col. Sawer. After the war the collection was expanded, and in the 1950s chimpanzees were acquired to provide tea parties for the public's entertainment, but this practice ceased in 1964. In 1973 the zoo expanded into the adjacent Western Springs park. From the late 1980s to the present day, many old exhibits were phased out and replaced by modern enclosures. In 2011 the zoo opened its largest development, Te Wao Nui, which exhibits native New Zealand flora and fauna.

The Auckland Zoo has a great section for New Zealand wildlife. I found the large open air mesh-covered NZ 🐦 "cage" (it was more like a small forest). This is were I met one of the zoo keepers feeding the birds, she was very nice and a great guide to all of the different kinda of birds. The parrots would pose on the rails making really easy to take photos. The kiwi bird exhibit is great but it is hard to take photos because its pretty dark. The rest of the zoo was pretty standard. The cafe at the zoo was a bit crowded but the setting was really nice and the food was great. All in all I would highly recommend the zoo as family day trip or as a chance for a tourist to see some of the native animals they missed on their trip.

This is a spectacular zoo! We love going to the zoo and this one is great. Easy trails to follow, nice atmosphere, a fairly wide variety of animals and one of the coolest enclosures I've ever seen. The Kiwi Bird exhibit is awesome! Such a treat to see the national bird up close and running around. Would definitely recommend a visit.

The Auckland Zoo was excellent. It was well laid-out, and the keeper talks really added a lot to the experience. The animals looked healthy and happy and listening to the keepers talk about things that they do to check the health of the animals and the breeding programs was very informative. The zoo campus feels like a beautiful park, and is a real oasis so close to the city. We also ate at Darwin's and were very impressed with the quality of food and the reasonable prices. The hot chocolate and coffee were both some of the best I've had in NZ. The burger was only $12 including a side of chips. I would definitely recommend the zoo to anyone visiting Auckland. I would say that the quality was comparable to the San Diego Zoo, just on a smaller scale.

The zoo was great, there is a wide variety v of animals. You need a whole day to really experience the whole place, sometimes waiting is necessary to get a good view of the animals. Their enclosures are clean and not too cramped. There are also a variety of food places around the zoo which make for welcome stops. The day we went was very hot, even for the animals, maybe a more overcast day would be better. Sunscreen recommended, the zoo has a little, but not much, we went early and it was already running out, and a tube in the shop costs $11, so better to take your own. The bug display is well done, informative.

We visited Auckland for a few days and one of our goals was to visit the zoo. Auckland Zoo was well worth the trip. It is well maintained, has a good layout and a nice selection of animals that the children really enjoyed. In particular, the Galapagos Tortoises and South American parrots were excellent. The children also really enjoyed the African animals, and the elephants were a big hit. The New Zealand section is also well worth the time, as you get to see some of those harder to see birds and lizards you wouldn't normally see. We visited when the elephant show was on and the children were captivated. We spent 3 hours at the zoo, and saw mostly everything. Make sure you bring a hat on sunny days!

Came to New Zealand for vacation. Near the end of our vacation, we decided to visit the zoo and it was a good idea! Took about 2-3 hours to view everything. Finally saw a Kiwi bird, not one but two! The zoo have a nice layout. There was some animals that wasn’t on site but it was fine. It was a great day at the zoo. We had lots of fun.

Lovely facilities well maintained. Lots of volunteers to assist on one's visit. The cafe at the entrance has well priced delicious foods. The salads are very good and the rice cake topped with carrot puree and duck breast was amazing. We bought 1 salad, 1 bruschetta with feta and tomato , 2 rice patties with carrot puree and duck and 2 pots of English breakfast tea which cost a total of only $20! As I am a person with a disability, my carer was given free entry. The disability toilet is well appointed. This was a lovely trip and I was most impressed. My only suggestion is for the zoo team to review their policy with their courtesy mobility scooter. They have a number of wheelchairs for hire and one mobility scooter. We asked if I could use it on entering the zoo at 9am and were told it had been reserved by another person. On leaving the zoo at 1245 we noticed the scooter had not been used after all.

Auckland Zoo is totally awesome ! It has a great collection of animals and I love the design and layout. Its easy to navigate and so beautiful. It’s definitely worth visiting especially if you have little kids. They have so much fun here. The place also has some cafes in case you want to grab a bite or rest up for a bit. This place is highly recommended.

I had no idea what to expect from Auckland zoo. Turns out it's awesome! They have a really wide mix of animals, from your traditional giraffes and the like, through to some weird and wonderful local animals. Seeing kiwis so close was amazing! Whilst I was there they had a bug exhibition on too which was well worth the extra entrance fee. All in all a really enjoyable day out for the family.

Great place to take kids. They can see a variety of animals that seem to be well cared for, and have space to move around. Also a good chance to find out about some of the environmental work the zoo is involved in. A lot of interesting events here too.

Always amazing to visit! Plenty of different wildlife to see, you can even ask the staff questions and they are happy to answer and discuss. A very relaxed place, spread across a vast area and you can also grab coffee, food, a snack, and there are toilets too.

I know that the zoo is constantly improving their exhibits to benefit the animals environment but it's still disappointing when there are a number of animals relocated whilst that's happening. Some of our favourites have gone. The marine and tropical aquarium seems to have gone and the really big walk through aviary seems to have been majorly downsized. We couldn't see any primates nor could we find the giant tortoise. We look forward to it all being finished. On the positives ... seeing the tiger was a highlight and it was great to read about all of the conservation projects that our entry fees support.

Our group of 4 adults, 2 toddlers and 1 infant had a lovely time getting up close and fairly personal with the animals. Highlights were the big cats - we were fortunate enough to witness the tiger being fed and to see both the lionesses and cheetahs on the prowl - and the elephants. There was also what looked to be a great playground for the kids, however, naptimes intervened. Recommended for anyone visiting Auckland.

We did the red panda experience. The woman who took us was very enthusiastic and full of knowledge, she was a pleasure to have as a guide! The rest of the zoo is tidy, and the enclosures see clean and spacious. It's just a shame we didn't have more time to look around.

Awesome experience here. Well worth the drive. I like how it felt like there was always something to see in every corner. For an example the Hamilton Zoo space was very big and it felt like a long walk whereas the Auckland Zoo they had all the animals so close to each other it felt like we didn't miss out on anything as all we had to do was walk all the way around to see all their animals which was structured fantastically. This is by far the best zoo I've seen and my babies loved it. Especially all the boat, playgrounds, and statue of animals.

Great place to take the family. Close interactions with the animals while maintaining safety. Zoo staff are helpful and the animals love putting on a great show for the kids to enjoy. Only reason for this 4 star rating as opposed to 5 star was that a large number of the exhibits were closed for construction and there are No more lions.

Pleasantly surprised, I have been to zoos all around the world and Auckland Zoo despite not being as big as many of them, still ranks well amongst my experience. It feels less like a Zoo curated with cages, but instead makes you feel as if you are just strolling through the environments native to the animals they house. Very cool.

Some people hate zoos for what they are but all.in all it remains a great place to take kids and have them witness live animals they would never see anywhere. The zoo isn't too expensive and they offer an annual pass if you think you might return multiple times. Its always clean and do put some emphasis on treating the animals respectfully.
