The most iconic landmark in the small medieval city of Aversa, 10 miles north of Naples. The bell tower, the arch and the connected church are part of a complex in the heart of the city, and feature a wide range of architectural styles sedimented through the centuries, from the late medieval times to the 19th century.

Eccezionale opera di architettura normanna. Aversa fu fondata ufficialmente da Rainulfo Drengot, che già nel 1022 aveva occupato un palazzo-castello che sorgeva accanto alla chiesa votiva di Sancte Paulum at Averze cingendo un'area pressoché circolare con fossi e siepi. Il Drengot ne divenne primo conte, nel 1030, su investitura di Sergio IV, duca di Napoli e poi confermato, nel 1038, dell'imperatore Corrado II.
