Muhammad Mosque or Siniggala Mosque is the mosque built in the 11th century in Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. The mosque is also known as Siniggala, after the name of its minaret – Siniggala (“damaged tower”). The mosque acquired its second name in 1723, when military squadron of Russian Army, consisting of 15 warships and led by Admiral Matyushkin, approached the city from seaside and demanded its surrender during the Russo-Persian War (1722-1723). Russian warships began to bomb the city after the refusal to surrender. One of the Russian shells hit the minaret of Muhammad Mosque and damaged it. A stormy wind then blew the Russian ships further out to sea. The population of the city interpreted the wind as a divine scourge sent to the occupants. From that time until the middle of the 19th century, the minaret of the mosque wasn’t reconstructed. It remained a symbol of the persistence and courage of the defendants of the tower.

We stayed in The Old City in one of the many good Hotels that are there, some good historical sites to be visited. There is a very good selection of Bars and Restaurants situated here as well. If your not staying in the Old City I would recommend a visit anyway !
awesome architectures, beautiful culture, day time and night time you can feel differently. very cultural, impressive buildings and people who is working there as sellers. Don't forget to walk through narrow streets inside and find some interesting things...
Absolutely beautiful. Architecturally, artistically, culturally satisfying experience. It is an amazing place to just roam around. There are plenty of cafes with proper heating. There are at least 2 museums that I know you of and lots of souvenir shops.
Wandering around the streets of Old City Baku left me mesmerized completely. The stunning architecture was very well preserved. The cobbled and narrow streets, the artistic wooden doors, the tiny windows, through which you could peep into and catch a glimpse of a cozy, warm home, all instilled a sense of tranquility within me.
Historic place to visit, always a good experience to be there. People are very friendly and cooperative, nice shops, items and sites to visit. Remember that you can always bargain on prices and you should. The price they tell you first is never final. And the people haven't learnt tricks yet, quite simple to handle.
Lovely place. We walked hours and hours every day in the historical center when we were in Baku. There are really good restaurants in the north-east corner. The shirmanshah palace is also worth to see.
The spirit of Old City is amazing! Walking in these streets whole of history is must do thing if you are in Baku! It absolutely worth your time! There are always different expositions you can visit for extra charge! And as always, there are discounts for students, so don’t forget your student ID! You also can visit the museum of smallest books in the world! Very interesting place you must visit)
Awesome vacation spot. A former Soviet Republic now open to tourists worldwide. A wonderful friendly people. Never had any problems finding someone who spoke English.
Lovely place. Historical n lovely architecture. Many restaurants n nice flea market around
Beautiful area. I don’t recommend going in the heat. Wear comfortable shoes as its a pretty large area with many small hills. Wide selection of restaurants and shops. Great place for tourists!
Old city of Baku is a great place to walk around. I would recommend going there once and mostly hanging around the fountain square after. Prices in old city tend to be higher although there are some. nicer brunch and dinner places that are. largely catered toward tourists.
If you're a lover of history and the old spirit of the cities this is a very good place to take a looooong walk. I remember wandering there for about 5 hours before sitting in a coffee to keep admiring the view of the old city walls. I recommend visiting this place by day and also by night, since it looks very different and very unique at night too. And less crowded of course. It's better to have a local guide, if you're interested in the history, it's very useful.
Beautiful old city. In principle restored old city. Esy to walk around with several places to drink coffee or eat. Several points of interest such as the maiden tower and the palace along with smaller attractions. Very hot in the summer!
