St. Mark's Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist, is the cathedral (Ecclesia Matar) of the Diocese of Central Karnataka of the Church of South India. The cathedral church, noted for its English Baroque architecture inspired by the 17th century St Paul's Cathedral, is located at the west end of Mahatma Gandhi Road, MacIver Town, Bangalore.
Founded in 1808, the cathedral celebrated its 200 years bicentenary in 2007-8. The cathedral is open for all people irrespective of religion or faith.

One of the famous churches in Bangalore. They also have huge open spaces for all types of functions.

St. Mark's Cathedral is large, old & well-to-do. It has a large membership (possibly over 2000) and many members hold (or have held in the past) important positions in the church, Government, military, police, public & private institutions etc. It is also the apex CSI church in Bangalore on account of being a 'Cathedral'. The large membership makes it necessary for St. Mark's to use over 6 pastors and conduct 4 separate worship services on Sundays (7 AM, 10:30 AM & 6:15 PM) and a 'Choral Eucharist' at 8:30 AM. A senior citizens' fellowship (with holy communion) is conducted at 11:00 AM on the 2nd & 4th Fridays of every month, specially intended at seniors & the elderly. Sunday School is conducted regularly on Sundays for children. The Cathedral has a modern 'Resource Centre' with chairs and adequate seating space for small functions, a Board Room, the church office & office rooms of the Presbyter/ Asst. Presbyter. Adjoining the Resource Centre is St. Mark's Music Academy (affiliated to Trinity College, London, UK). The academy is open to members of the public in addition to St. Marks' members. Next-door to the music academy is accommodation for Christian senior citizens (limited). Then, on the opposite side (i.e. the Lavelle Road side) are the residences of pastors. The large compound of the Cathedral is surrounded by walls running all around and it is divided into lawns & gardens, car parking areas, areas for conducting open-air events like wedding receptions, music concerts, Sales & Auctions and the like. The compound contains a variety of trees including fruit trees (e.g. mango & jack-fruit) and very likely has regular bird visitors too! Now, turning to spiritual aspects, the large membership of St.Mark's makes developing close relationships between either pastors and members or between members themselves impossible. You might attend for several Sundays together and yet know neither any of the pastors nor other members closely with the result that you might feel that you don't belong. Pastors are unable to make individual house visits and hence the feeling of isolation might deepen over time. Most major activities of the CSI in Bangalore (like visits of evangelists, foreign choirs etc.) will usually have a hop at St. Mark's. If you plan to visit by Metro, you need to alight at the 'M.G. Road' metro station.

An absolutely stunning Cathedral at the helm of St. Marks road. Being able to pray here is an honor. The architecture of this church is Victorian and is a sight to be seen. Another inserting feature is the organ which has sound pipes from the erstwhile British Raj. The Bangalore school of music also has a presence here and I had the absolute honor of being trained by the late great David Sebastian.
