The Palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a botanical garden of 120.000 m² specialized in palms (Arecaceae) . It is an artificial hill, with views of the ocean, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The gardens include a large system of waterfalls, streams and ponds, a museum dedicated to palms, and a display shade house. The project was started in 1995 on a former landfill and only opened to the public in 2014. The valuable palm collection gathers about 600 species of palms and it is focused on the ones native to world islands. Trees and shrubs of other plant families are also displayed, organised in "biogeographical sections". All gardens are maintained with no pesticides and no fertilizers, different species of wild birds are easily seen in the palmetum.
The palmetum is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, capital city of the Western Canary Islands, in the district of Cabo Llanos, by the Parque Marítimo César Manrique. It is an artificial hill originally made of rubbish: a former landfill of the city, by the ocean. The average annual temperature is 21,7 °C and the absolute minimum temperature recorded is 13 °C.

The Palmetum was absolutely beautiful although it will probably be even better next month. As it was April not everything was in flower but some flowers were in bud and others were just about to. The highlight was seeing Monarch butterflies and caterpillars. The butterflies were really easy to photograph as they were still drying their wings. A superb sight. I also didn't know that there were so many different types of palm and tropical trees. The lizards and frogs were basking and the birds were singing too. An excellent visit as the weather was superb too!

Great area, took us a couple hours round to have a good look and read about everything. Some nice views out onto the sea on one side and of Santa Cruz on the other. Can buy an information booklet with a map for 50cents or download a free app that explains various points around the garden.

A fantastic place where you can walk and admire countless species of Palm trees from all over the world. A truly relaxing experience. The entrance ticket is only 6€ and it's totally worth It!

I had an awesome time at Palmetum! Didn't know what to expect, but definitely received more than I ever could have imagined. It was easy to follow which palm trees are native to which side of the world. The garden was clean, quiet, plus amazing views over the ocean and Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz. The visit was worth its price.

Really pretty, calming and a beautiful way to spend an hour or so. Unbelievable to think this was a garbage dump in the recent past. Highly recommended, and buy the self guide leaflet, it's great...

Great botanical garden for 6 EUR (May 2018). Probably worth taking audio guide as so much info. The best part of the park is that it is build on Tenereife's refuse hill, which existed for years. It is very environmentally clean park, no chemicals etc

Pleasant place for a quiet stroll. Interesting enough. Do splash out the 50c for the leaflet to give tote visit some shape. You might get lucky and see a tug working as you pass the viewpoints.

Amazing place full of really diverse palm trees. Very well planned, with linear sightseeing path that helps while visiting. The crown jewel would be "Octagon", which is tightly packed with plants.
