The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a major church in the upper town of Bergamo, Northern Italy.
According to the popular tradition, partially supported by documents, the church was built to comply with a vow made to the Virgin Mary in 1133 by the citizens of Bergamo to protect the city from the plague that was hitting northern Italy at that time.
Absolutely stunning! Have seen many temples in my life but the grandeur of this one made me feel so small and hopeless. There is nothing in our lives today that can unite so much talent, funds and time around an idea.

On 15th of August 1137 Gregory, Bishop of Bergamo, blessed the first stone of a new Romanesque building. The church was consecrated by Bishop Guiscardo Suardi on 25th March 1273.

Unfortunately original interiors were almost totally missing in result of baroque renovations. Although some original frescoes of XIV-XV centuries still exist. Outside basilica preserved it's Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. Admission is free and visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.
