The Old South Meeting House is a historic Congregational church building located at the corner of Milk and Washington Streets in the Downtown Crossing area of Boston, Massachusetts, built in 1729. It gained fame as the organizing point for the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773. Five thousand or more colonists gathered at the Meeting House, the largest building in Boston at the time.
The meeting house or church was completed in 1729, with its 56 m (183 ft) steeple. The congregation was gathered in 1669 when it broke off from First Church of Boston, a Congregational church founded by John Winthrop in 1630. The site was a gift of Mrs. Norton, widow of John Norton, pastor of the First Church in Boston. The church's first pastor was Rev. Thomas Thatcher, a native of Salisbury, England. Thatcher was also a physician and is known for publishing the first medical tract in Massachusetts.

One of my favorite museums in Boston. I've walked the Freedom Trail a couple of times, and this was one of the highlights on both trips. The interior iteself is interesting, being relatively unchanged from the revolutionary era. There are also plenty of very well-constructed, fascinating exhibits about the building's history. A very nice way to spend a couple of hours.

One of the historic sites along the Freedom Trail. It's quite remarkable for being the venue for organizing the Boston Tea Party, one of the significant events that led to US independence from Britain.

You can't visit Boston to see History - without seeing the Old South Meeting House. My daughter and I visited on July 4 - we had already done the guided Freedom Walk, but went back to see inside the building. This is a very easy stop. There is an exhibit and an audio tour available for you. We instead just walked inside, sat down on a bench, and soaked up the atmosphere. If you try you can see the Colonists, hear the arguments. This site is included on the Go Boston Card. We stayed for about 10 minutes and that was perfect. I definitely recommend it.

Very informative but not worth the 10$. It takes you about 20-30 minutes to read everything.

Make sure to see the Boston Tea Party re-enactment every December 16th, at the Old South Meeting House. Fascinating and great event for all ages.

A really nice museum, only $6. If you are into colonial history this is a great place to visit on Boston's Fees Trail. The old South meeting house is where the planning stage for the Boston tea party took place.

This was such an interesting place to visit. They had a few things out that helped to make the exhibit more interactive. The docent that was there was especially knowledgeable and sweet. There are scavenger hunt for youth of all ages as well.

The Old South Meeting House (US$6 per adult) is one of the important stops on the Freedom Trail in Boston. Built in 1729, this attraction offers a nice stop to see Georgian period architecture. We particularly liked the modest red brick facade and building steeple. Inside the Old South Meeting House, you can visit the meeting hall, where debates were heard regarding British taxation on the colonies as well as protests and outcries regarding the events of the infamous Boston Massacre. Within the main hall you can see pew boxes (two of which are original found on the sides of the hall) where parties would have sat and debated local affairs. There are also a collection of displays regarding social and political issues deliberated at the Old South Meeting Hall. These help provide context on events which took place here that lead to the American Revolution as well as shaping the country during its early days. Overall, a nice stop for those with interest in early American history. There is also a good gift shop in the basement of the Old South Meeting House, which find near the building exit. Note: At the Old South Meeting House, you can buy a combo ticket that includes entrance into the Old State House and the Paul Revere House, giving you a $3 savings compared to buying each ticket individually.

Great piece of history. Beautiful architecture. Dove in here during the rain. Spent over an hour reading and learning from the exhibits.

Certainly cool to see, but it is just one big room. Make sure you download the audio presentations to your phone and listen to them while you are in the meeting house. It requires a QR scanner on your device so make sure you have one installed. Otherwise you will be doing a lot of reading. The recorded version nhelps bring the exhibit to life.
