Bratislava Castle (Slovak: Bratislavský hrad, IPA: [ˈbracislaʊ̯skiː ˈɦrat] ( listen), German: Pressburger Schloss, Hungarian: Pozsonyi Vár) is the main castle of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The massive rectangular building with four corner towers stands on an isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube river in the middle of Bratislava. Because of its size and location, it has been a dominant feature of the city for centuries.
A very beautiful picturesque castle. we visited it as part of the Free walking tour which again was excellent. The only downfall is that you can't go in and it is quite a trek up the hill just to look at a building. The gardens are beautiful.
Empty ..but nice...history somehow should be more presented...even it is not easy in a culturally very mixed environment. Maybe therefore it is better that it is empty. No one's national feeling would get hurt. Anyhow, very well renovated walls and good infrastructure. Good parking, restaurants etc....
There's a lot of history behind this modern castle. Very nice place! The wiev from above it's incredible! I recommend to spend more than one hour inside and visit all the castle's rooms. There is a very strange little tower inside it, FIND IT!!
If I can give no star, that’s what I would give for this touristy trap place !! Though the original castle was built in the 800s, other than the pics there’s nothing original here. Glasswares made in the last 10 to 20 yrs is all they have in one entire floor and random paintings for which both the artist and mode is unknown ! Only good part is, you get a good view of the town from the top !
An excellent building and area, totally worth visiting! Easy to get to by public transport (had I known I'd have to literally climb that mountain, I would've taken the trolley!). There's a wonderful view there, you can see all the opposite Danube bank, the SNP tower and the lovely city centre churches and red roofs. Loved it and would be happy to get back one day!
Plenty to do with informative and well-laid out exhibitions. Perfect for a rainy day! The staff were friendly and helpful, especially in the little cafe. The story of the castle’s restoration is fascinating and there are some wonderful views to be had from all over the building and grounds.
The castle by itself is not a spectacular building, except for its size...as it looks more like a modern apartment. It is however perched on top the hill, offering a lovely view of the city and of the river Danube... The parliament building is across the castle and is right next to the old town. An interesting visit if you are in Bratislava
Nice, clan and peaceful place. Full views of city from Castle. The castle is at top with a at height. You will also experience panaromic of city from the top. The bridge along river has good view from right side of castle. There is also one souvenir shop which provide good stuffs.
Brilliant view if the city. I didn’t visit the interior, only the museum, which was quiet and nice. You can find sculptures, books, notebooks, postcards and key rings. The building of the castle looks very elegant and imposing. There were plenty of visitors outside even thought it was winter and cold. I would recommend going if you are around Bratislava. You can spot the other attractions from there.
After a steep walk up to the castle, we found the main palace closed with the police force stationed at all gates, and some cameramen kept coming in & out. Not sure if there was a special event going on that day. Nice to walk along the aisles which connect different parts of the castle, with the nice weather you will be stunned by the view across the Danube River.
What a beautifully restored castle. The buildings, the surrounding area and the views over the city and the Danube are really good. The climb up to the tower is definitely worthwhile. The museum offers a good insight into the history of the area as well as the restoration of the castle itself. Only the guidance through the building could be improved. I found it rather difficult to figure out if I had seen all of it. They could definitely improve that part. But otherwise it is really amazing.
Review in short: Impressive in its own way, but don’t expect too much! Some friends of mine who visited other European cities like Vienna and Prague, mentioned that the castle is good for Skyline of Bratislava and view over the old city and Danube river. I would say that good guided tour will enrich your experience of visiting this castle! If you visit, your experience is likely to between assessment of my friends and me! But, you have come this far to Bratislava, I don’t think you have a reason not to visit it!
Castle is a good walk uphill from the Old Town, and the hike lends itself to an amazing panoramic view of the Danube, UFO bridge and Petržalka area of Bratislava. The castle atop the hill was actually rebuilt quite recently, so don't expect to see the kind of old Baroque architecture that is so popular in the region. There is a museum in the inner wing of the castle, which was free when we visited (free every first Sunday of the month, if I remember correctly). You can find the castle's history on the ground floor, a fascinating red-carpeted staircase, and quite interesting exhibition of various themes across the three floors above ground. Once you have seen all of the exhibition, you can take a spiral staircase on the fourth floor up to a viewing room which offers panoramic, high-rise view of Bratislava via windows on all sides of the room.
Impressive location near city centre. A landmark visible from many places in town. Popular with tourists. Free to visit and a nice walk. View from the castle mainly onto the housing estates beyond the river.
This Castle has it's own beauty. You should not expect to see treasures similar to what you can find in Prague or Vienna. What you will find instead is a nice story of Czechs and Slovaks during the time and how they got two independent states. They have some nice old retro (of the 19's) objects exposed in the museum. I would say that it's worth seeing something different than treasures: gold and silver statues.
Bratislava Castle is located very close to the Old Town and is well worth a visit as it has breathtaking views. It has a motor climb from the old town but well worth it. There is a museum inside which is well worth a look. Towards the rear it has manicured gardens. Please click this review was helpful if you like the information and photos
Nice place to walk around. There weren’t any staff or anything like that to get help from. But the surroundings was nice. They have a museum but it wasn’t open when I were there. Don’t miss to go to the garden they have. A very nice maintained place.
A modern castle in many respects. Beautiful, well maintained grounds that includes a fantastic French fashioned garden. Excellent views of the Danube can be seen from many points along the castle walls. As you’d expect, very touristy, but well worth your time.
It is one of the must-see places in Bratislava. The building is in really nice condition as it is renovated, but if you explore a bit around it you can find old walls that surround it. You can go for a really nice walk around the castle, and there is even a small playground for kids.
