Volk's Electric Railway (VER) is a narrow gauge heritage railway that runs along a length of the seafront of the English seaside resort of Brighton. It was built by Magnus Volk, the first section being completed in August 1883, and is the oldest operational electric railway in the world, though it was not the first electric railway to be built. It was preceded by electrification of Miller's line in 1875, Werner von Siemens' 1879 demonstration line in Berlin and by the Gross-Lichterfelde Tramway of 1881, although none of these remain in operation.
If you have come here on holiday this is a great way to see the sites the vintage railway takes you on ride for a mile along the sea front. Volk’s Electric Railway normally opens each year shortly before, or at Easter and will run until the END of October. Trains start at 10.15am except on Mondays and Fridays when they start at 11.15am. Trains run every 15 minutes after starting, at half past, quarter to, on the hour and quarter past until the last train of the day. Last trains are at 5pm Monday to Friday and at 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. Train times are the starting times from the end stations, Aquarium Station and Black Rock (Marina) Station. A journey from Aquarium Station to Black Rock (Marina) Station takes about 12 minutes in total. Allow 30 minutes for a return journey.

This place is excellent and I thoroughly recommend that you visit I went trying to get a train to go up to Scotland but unfortunately they said that the trains do not go to Scotland they only go up the hill and I said but I need a train that will take me to Scotland and they said well if you go up the hill then you can get off the train and then you can catch another train when you are at the top and I thought that was a very very reasonable thing to do and very useful so I got on the train and I had an excellent time I had a look around and it was very nice it does go up a very steep hill and I thought that perhaps I could walk down the hill but I thought I would not and I got the train up and I got the train down and I had a lovely day out

This was the best thing we did in Brighton ... especially after we could not access the “dog unfriendly” Pier. The people on the Volks Electric Railway (VER) were so kind to our dog. We really enjoyed the trip. Good value too. It is a VERry good attraction in Brighton.

Opens an hour later than advertised, so don't get there early. They didn't have any change when they did finally open so getting ticks was unnecessarily complex. The ride was good fun.

Very nice. First rode this railway as a kid (50+years ago). So glad it's still going!
