Burg Square is a square and former fortress in Bruges. It is one of the main squares of the city.
The Burg was originally surrounded by walls and had entrance gates. It is one of the oldest parts of the city centre. The fortress was located at the meeting-point of the Oudenburg-Aardenburg Roman road (the Zandstraat) and the Reie canal. The fortress was around one hectare in size. Count Arnulf I of Flanders (889-965) extended the Bruges fortress to create a powerful, imperial administrative centre of one and a half hectares. Steen Castle, which was one of the residences of the Counts of Flanders, was located on the western side of the square from the 11th century until the end of the 13th century. The castle church—which was dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Donatian—was built to the north, within the fortifications, and a chapter of canons was later established. This gave the fortress a dual purpose: the southern part served a civil purpose and the northern part was religious. When Bruges became a diocese in 1559, Saint Donatian’s Church became a cathedral.
One of the main attraction of Brussels.. in my view those people who don't like crowded places.. don't think of going here on weekends but others will definitely enjoy... Nice place and all 4 corners are special

The Wintervonken in the Burg Square is the city's thankyou to it's people for putting up with tourists AND winter. Held in late January it features a musical spectacular (this year a combination of beautiful opera and flying bicycles !) There's also a mad French brass band and a Fire Terrace with token-only bar and fantastic hot soup courtesy of the Pas Partout soup kitchen . Everyone turns up with a smile. Such a contrast to the overpriced trash and drunken louts we'd get at home. I love Europe even though I don't want to be part of it!

Beautiful square.... there was a stage set up when we were there, with a great string ensemble performing (plus accordions). Some couples were dancing the tango at the front of the crowd. Lovely area with beautiful buildings (and the Church of the Holy Blood too).

Lovely square. The clock tower is quite imposing. If you in Bruges a must. Loads of cafes around the square.

It's not the main area, The Markt, but his nice buildings including the old City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. There is a good chocolatier in this square and a decent restaurant. You are still in the tourist area, so the restaurant is priced accordingly. We had a goos meal there and enjoyed some Belgium beer.
