Villers Abbey (abbaye de Villers) is an ancient Cistercian abbey located in the town of Villers-la-Ville, in the Walloon Brabant province of Wallonia (Belgium), one piece of the Wallonia's Major Heritage. Founded in 1146, the abbey was abandoned in 1796. Most of the site has since fallen into ruins.
In 1146, 12 Cistercian monks and three lay brothers from Clairvaux came to Villers in order to establish the abbey on land granted them by Gauthier de Marbais. After establishing several preliminary sites (Villers I and Villers II), work was finally undertaken in the 13th century to build the current site. The choir was constructed by 1217, the crypt by 1240, and the refectory by 1267. The church itself took 70 years to build and was completed by the end of the century.

As a biker, I always like to stop for a drink on the terrasse while admiring the ruins of the abbey. It's a nice pit stop place when you wander in the Brabant Wallon ! The abbey itself is a really nice place to visit as well! Enjoyable with you family!

I had high expectations but was still blown away by this historic beauty! A very interesting and absolutely magnificent place that I heartily recommend. We visited on a weekday and I advise you to do the same, you will avoid so many crowds.

Ruins of XIII century abbey, abandoned some 200 years ago. Entrance through nearby building. Overpriced (8€ entry fee), but free parking for visitors. Not pram-friendly, but a couple of lifts do exist. Beautiful sights and interesting gardens with medicinal plants. We saw a couple shooting wedding pics.

This place is stellar! There is an entrance cost, which has to be paid. To reach the site, you will have to walk a littlebit. Beware, there are places where wheelchair might not be accessible. The ruins of the monastery are beautiful for photography. Try the beer at cafe!

Interesting to see this large defunct Abbey. Basic map given with the 8 euro (adult) entry fee which was enough to get the basic details. Interactive display in the beginning of the tour gives some insights into the lives of the monks who lived here.
