The Romanian National Opera, Bucharest (Romanian: Opera Națională București) is one of the four national opera and ballet companies of Romania. The company is headquartered in Bucharest, near the Cotroceni neighbourhood.
In 1877, Romanian government regulation stipulated the formation of an opera company under the auspices of the Romanian National Theatre. On 8 May 1885, the Compania Opera Română (Romanian Opera Company) gave its first performance. The Romanian composer, conductor, singer and teacher George Stephănescu (1843-1925) was the founding director of this company. In 1921, the company was formally established as an independent institution, with subsequent funding that oscillated between direct government funding and funding from private individuals. The first production by the newly formalized company was of Wagner's Lohengrin, conducted by George Enescu.

It is a place of culture where many great artist have performed. Its still has some very talented artists, however not so many and their number is declining mainly due to strong mentalities anchored in the dark past of Romania. The very talented people ar leaving so many performances are mediocre. And the translation is really bad containing many many grammar errors. This is not acceptible in a house of culture.

Usually there are good shows, but the last one I saw was Rigoletto and I didn't like it that much. It was a reinterpretation and the action was happening in Chicago, in the 30s, but they were speaking Italian. It was weird. But they've had some amazing props and the room looks amazing. Some of the people are really stupid and even though the staff is asking for a few times to close the phones, they don't do it, and of course their phones are ringing during the show. It happened two times in the last one.

Splendid building! The opera performance was wonderful with good sonority even to the top seats. You should dress with fewer layers because if it's full house it will be hot inside (no AC). Pick a central seat in order to have a good view. Uncomfortable seats at the balcony.
