The Citadella is the fortification located upon the top of Gellért Hill in Budapest, Hungary. Citadella is the Hungarian word for citadel, a kind of fortress. The word is exclusively used by other languages to refer to the Gellért Hill citadel which occupies a place which held strategic importance in Budapest's military history.
The fortress was built in 1851 by Julius Jacob von Haynau, a commander of the Austrian Empire, and was designed by Emmanuel Zitta and Ferenc Kasselik, after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It occupies almost the entire 235 metres high plateau. The fortress is a U-shaped structure built about a central courtyard, being 220 metres long, 60 metres wide, and 4 metres tall. It had a complement of sixty cannons.

Great view on Budapest panorama. The monument itself is great, it is huge, definitely worth seeing. In the time when i was there, citadella itself was not open for visitors, not sure if it can be entered. On the road to panorama view you can find souvenir street shops with magnets, Hungarian drinks and spices, as well as other kind of souvenirs. I'm sorry that i was not there by night, i believe that view is even better than! If you go in winter time, be prepared for strong and cold winds :)

Absolute must when visiting Budapest. Walking distance from city center, also from both railway stations. Lot of stairs to get there, but absolutely worth it. View is just amazing to whole city. Some refreshment available during winter, toilet as well. Worth to go also in the evening, view is beautiful.

On any trip to Budapest, one may make the time to visit this hilltop location which provides a panoramic view of the beautiful and complex city. The citadel, as the name suggests, was a former Fort constructed during the Hapsburg monarchy. During WW2, this fortress was occupied by the German's. Today the fortress serves as a museum depicting the historic past of the location.

A park, a citadel, an awesome view. It is romantic. It is magic. In the middle of a beautiful city. Just go there and enjoy. ;-)

A great panoramic place for you to be while in Budapest. Great surroundings and a great souvenir market there. Worth visiting!

I only had a day in Budapest and wanted to get round as much as possible on the Pest side. I had a quick visit here but I will be back at some point to spend more time here. Maybe when it gets a little warmer. This place looks absolutely stunning and gives great views of Budapest from the highest point.

Great views of the city on a good sunny day. The statues are beautiful and the walk up was good exercise. It's not as high as it seems so it's suitable for all. The path up has quite a bit of trash though and no one but a very considerate old man was picking them up. People should take better care of their own city - the trash on the street problem is all over Budapest, not just at the citadel.

Worth the walk up. It’s not too strenuous and there’s plenty of stops en route. Lovely views across Budapest. Great for photo opportunities.

Great hike! I didn't expect to be out of breath upon reaching the top of this hill. The views are amazing! Definitely recommend this, however you may find it a little bit difficult to get up if you are a bit out of shape (like me!😅).

Possibly the most crowded of all the vantage points in Budapest. At the Saturday evening the were scores of tourists. But the area at the top is spacious and most of them seemed to be coming by the easiest way, so the paths are relatively empty. Each of the hills above the city offer a slightly different perspective so I'd suggest visiting others also.

A very special place with a interesting historical context, as it's purpose changed occasionally. I recommend the small hike up the gellert hill in the late evening. You will be awarded with a beautiful view over the illuminated city of pest and in some places even a look to the castle. I liked it very much. After that you can walk down to a enlighted path and reach the bridge that works as a travel point.

It might be a long walk to get to the top, but everything is green, peaceful, a lot of different ways to get to the top, great views of the city and the river. If it a nice place to stay a while, relax, take a few pictures and move on. It might be crowded. In spring was ok, I couldn’t tell in other seasons.

Probably my favourite place for panoramic view of the city. We came here at 7:35pm and the place was already quite crowded with people and tourists. Highly recommend to come here a bit earlier to enjoy a great sunset!

My colleagues and I took a hop on / hop off bus to the Citadel (the one with the giraffe, which I do not recommend). Typically there is 30 minutes between buses and that is about how much time you need to see the sights. After getting off the bus, you will need to walk to top of the Citadel Hill to see the sights (the route is lined with souvenir / craft booths, which are nice to visit on the way down). If you’re catching the bus, be sure to walk all the way down and make sure you go to the right stop for your bus line. Ours was all the way down at the bottom of the hill (which we did not realize). Overall, the Citadel was interesting and worth visiting.

Gorgeous fort on top of the hill on the Buda side of the city right across the Central market hall that lies on the other. A memorial representing the war struggle of the people. Indeed an eye catcher, and one of the dominating structures on the banks of Danube. Needs approx. a 5 min. uphill walk to reach and has great views of the Danube and the city.

SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!! Loved this place. I would suggest getting there 20 mins before sunset, and watch the colours change over Budapest from the top. The place is very touristy so get there early to get a good spot. Bring a few beers and sit and enjoy the scenery. Amazing place.

It is my first place in Budapest! It was really impressed buda and pest sightseeing at the hill. Do not try to go to by walk this season, really hot weather now, 08. 06. 2018. Many people said night view is really good in Budapest, yes right😁 but day view also great!

Take a night hike up to Citadella and the spectacular panoramic view that awaits. Lots of photo op and generally a relaxing safe place to hangout, just remember to pack some snacks with you if you go at night!

The view is gorgeous. There was a maintenance so we could not go inside the castle. The food stalls are a tad expensive. The climb up is doable considering there are often proper staircases. It's crowded but it does not ruin the experience. I would recommend going to this place to everyone. We caught a sunset. It was beautiful.

Wonderful site to visit :-) After my visit there, I definitely recommend this place... It's a place to be in Budapest. The view of the city is wonderful from the top. Especially in the night you can see how beautiful Budapest is ☺️ Experienced this during Summer and Winter... Awesome 😉 Try climb by the stairs and relax enjoying the cold wind when you reach the edge like a reward of your efforts 🤗

This was quite a hike, but definitely worth it. We went quite early in the morning and there was not a lot of people when we got to the top. There was a locked toilet in the way, but unfortunately didn't manage to find an open one. The view was absolutely amazing. This is something you should not miss when going to Budapest!

View from the top is absolutely amazing. Very nice place to relax. There’s good up there so don’t worry carrying too much luggage while hiking. There are buses that go up there too. Beautiful place for people into photography or if you just want to relax and watch the sunset.

A fantastic sight to be hold as the walk up from Elisabeth Bridge holds many small treasures. From the fantastic trek to the locals singing songs along the way up. The vast reach the Citadella has along with the statues are great to take photos with, definitely a place to visit if your touring Budapest.
