Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church (Coptic: ϯⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲛ̀ⲧⲉⲑⲉⲟⲇⲟⲕⲟⲥ ϯⲁⲅⲓⲁ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ ϧⲉⲛ ⲃⲁⲃⲩⲗⲟⲛ ⲛ̀ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Church of Mother of God Saint Mary in Egyptian Babylon), also known as the Hanging Church (Arabic: الكنيسة المعلقة, romanized: al-Kanīsa al-Muʿallaqa, Coptic: ϯⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲉⲥⲓϣⲓ), is one of the oldest churches in Egypt which dates to the third century. It belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
The Hanging Church is named for its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo); its nave is suspended over a passage. The church is approached by twenty-nine steps; early travelers to Cairo dubbed it "the Staircase Church". The land surface has risen by some six metres since the Roman period, so the Roman tower is mostly buried below ground, reducing the visual impact of the church's elevated position.

Interesting, historic church. It's well worth visiting with a Coptic guide to learn something of Coptic history, architecture, and tradition while you are there. You need to use your imagination to visualize how the church was "hanging" when it was constructed. It was built over the gate/wall of the existing Roman fortress, but over the centuries, the fortress walls became somewhat buried as the ground level built up.

Starting from the entrance, you enter a different world. While it's bustling and noisy outside, the church is very calm. We went up on the second floor to see the construction of the ceiling. Apparently the "hanging" part can only be seen from a glass floor near the church entrance. It's nice, but I thought we're able to observe how it's hanging in a more up-close manner.

A beautiful church built above the supposed remains of the tower of Babylon. The church itself is built without a foundation and thus it's name; the Hanging Church. The roof was built in the shape and likeness of Noah's ark.

There were many visitors when we visited this place. But it's worth to spend time and learn about how Christian arrived in Egypt. There are other churches and a Jewish synagogue nearby where you can enter for free and see the architecture from both inside and outside.
