هو السلطان الناصر حسن بن السلطان الملك الناصر محمد بن السلطان الملك المنصور قلاوون، ويعتبر ملك مصر التاسع عشر من جنس الترك المماليك، والسابع من أولاد الناصر محمد بن قلاوون. تولَّى السلطنة مرتين، كانت أولاهما في رمضان سنة 748هـ = ديسمبر 1347م، وكان عمره آنذاك 13 سنة؛ وثانيها عام 755هـ = 1354م بعد أن سجن لمدة ثلاثة أعوام.. وكان له خصال طيبة؛ فقد كان ملكًا حازمًا، مَهيبًا، شجاعًا، صاحب حرمة وكلمة نافذة، لم يشرب الخمر، ولم يأتِ بفاحشة ظاهرة، واختلف عن كثير من ملوك وأمراء المماليك، يصفه “ابن تغري بردي” في كتابه (النجوم الزاهرة): “بأنه كان مفرط الذكاء، عاقلاً فيه، رفيقًا بالرعية، متدينًا شهمًا، ولو وجد ناصرًا أو معينًا لكان أجلَّ الملوك”. ومن أهم أعماله بنائه لمسجد باسمه وهو جامع ومدرسة السلطان حسن يقول المقريزي عن الجامع: “وهو تجاه قلعة الجبل – قلعة صلاح الدين- فيما بين القلعة وبركة الفيل … وابتدأ السلطان عمارته في سنة 757هـ، وأوسع دوره وعمله في أكبر قالب وأحسن هندام وأضخم شكل، فلا يُعرف في بلاد الإسلام معبد من معابد المسلمين يحاكي هذا الجامع” يتكون المسجد من أربعة إيوانات متعامدة متواجهة مشرفة أكبرها الشرقى، حيث التمهيد المؤدى إلى القبة، ويبلغ طول الدهليز المؤدي إلى القبة 28 متر. ويأخذ المسجد في بناءه طراز المساجد الفارسية حيث يمكن للنظار استيعاب مساحته من أي زاوية. وتوجد نقوش محدودة على جدران البناء ، مثل شريط الجس الموجود في الإيوان الشرقي وقد كتب عليه جمل بالخط الكوفي مستوحاة من أوراق النبات نصها: «أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم، بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، إنا فتحنا لك فتحا مبينا، ليغفر لك الله ما تقدم من ذنبك وما تأخر ويتم نعمته عليك ويهديك صراطا مستقيما، وينصرك الله نصرا عزيزا، هو الذى أنزل السكينة في قلوب المؤمنين ليزدادوا إيمانا مع إيمانهم ولله جنود السموات والأرض وكان الله عليما حكيما ليدخل المؤمنين والمؤمنات جنات تجرى من تحتها الأنهار خالدين فيها ويكفر عنهم سيئاتهم وكان ذلك عند الله فوزاً عظيماً». [1]. النص القرآنى هنا جزء رئيسى من البناء، ويسهم في إبراز الهدف منه، وبث السكينة في النفوس، وأرواح الموتى المفترض رقودهم تحت القبة، خاصة روح من أمر بتشييد المسجد، السلطان نفسه. وصحن المسجد على هيئة مربع تقريبا، طوله 34.60 متر وعرضه 37.5 متر، الأرضية مفروشة بالرخام، في المركز تماما فسقية للوضوء تعلوها قبة خشبية تقوم على ثمانية أعمدة، كتب على القبة آية الكرسى وتاريخ الفراغ منها، هذه الميضأة تذكرنى بأخرى تتوسط مسجد السلطان برقوق في النحاسين، والذى يكون ملخصاً معماريًا جميلاً لمدرسة ومسجد السلطان حسن.

Considered as the most distinguished islamic architectural design The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a massive mosque and madrassa located in the Old city of Cairo, it was built during the Mamluk Islamic era in Egypt. Its construction began 757 AH/1356 CE with work ending three years later "without even a single day of idleness". At the time of construction the mosque was considered remarkable for its fantastic size and innovative architectural components. Commissioned by an-Nasir Hasan, a sultan of a short and relatively unimpressive profile, al-Maqrizi noted that within the mosque were several "wonders of construction".The mosque was, for example, designed to include schools for all four of the Sunni schools of thought: Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanafi and Hanbali.

Considered the first school in history to teach the four doctrines of islam simultaneously . It served as both a school and a mosque . Sadly , it needs much restoration and care as its current state of being doesn't match its great history .
