The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra is a collection of portraits of prominent Australians (by birth or association) who are important in their field of endeavour or whose life sets them apart as an individual of long-term public interest. The collection was established in May 1998, and until 2008 was housed in Old Parliament House and in a nearby gallery on Commonwealth Place. On 4 December 2008, its purpose-built permanent home was opened on King Edward Terrace, Canberra – beside the High Court of Australia – by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

I went to the "Cartier" exhibition. Very well laid out and easy to get around. Our tour guide was great. I look forward to going back to see more of the gallery
Wish I'd had more time and not aching feet! It is great to have available the short histories of the Australians portrayed. Both the subjects and artistic styles are many and varied, something for everyone!
Visited the interesting permanent collection which is a potted history of Australia. Good quality. Also paid $10 to do the virtual reality International Space Station docking and return to Earth which was great but would have benefitted from chairs that move to match what is going on. Lunch at the very popular cafe there was good value and tasty.
Visiting as part of a tour and enjoyed the collections of photos and contemporary art pieces. Beautifully designed, near city center. We arrived by bus but one also walk. It's a good place for a functional visit. We were catered as well as part of the tour. Great experience as we had the gallery to ourselves.
Nice place to visit, sufficient (paid) parking available underground. Variety of portraits thru the ages to modern ones including various mediums such as canvas and also photography etc. Very quiet and chilled out place. No fee required, but donations encouraged. Art and portrait aficionados will appreciate. Allowing 1 hour when visiting would be sufficient.
The National Portrait Gallery is amazing. The building is beautiful. The opening hours are quite accommodating. The permanent displays are wonderful warranting return, and the visiting displays are visually compelling. The gallery shop has hidden treasures for purchase. Generally children's activities are offered. Toilets clean, and cloaking room is trustworthy. Airconditioning.
One of the BEST Art Galleries I have visited Anywhere ! It has a Kids Play & Create Space as well. Something for everyone, Convenient Parking nearby. Free entry to Gallery. Wonderful collection of Australian Achievers from All walks of Life. Well Done !!
A small gallery but it holds a great collection of portraits of prominent Australians and early colonials. Convenient parking under the gallery. Also has a gift/book shop and café. Situated close to the National Gallery of Australia, so you can plan to see both in the one trip.
Outstanding museum showcasing exceptional portrait collection both historical and modern. The extensive selection of photos and paintings by Australian and International Artists were truly a great joy to see. The museum is mostly free except for the featured collections. It's only a few minutes walk from the National Gallery and the National Library. It features a nice cafe for you to sit and enjoy a cup.
