The National Roman Legion Museum (Wales) (Welsh: Amgueddfa Lleng Rufeinig Cymru) is a museum in Caerleon, near Newport, south-east Wales. It is one of three Roman sites in Caerleon, along with the Baths museum and the open-air ruins of the amphitheatre and barracks. It is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.
Roman Wales was the farthest point west that the Roman Empire in Roman Britain extended to, and as a defence point the fortress at Isca Augusta, now Caerleon, built in 75 AD, was one of only three permanent Roman Legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. It was occupied and operational for just over 200 years.
My partner and I had some time to kill before she was called for her show in Newport and she had spotted this Roman fortress on the way to our hotel. The only thing we had to pay for was parking which was right outside the bathhouse and that was cheap (70p per hour). The staff in the bathhouse were very friendly and helpful. The bathhouse museum was very well done and interesting. Due to time restraints we could either do the museum or the amphitheatre so the amphitheatre it was. The map was helpful but the entrance could have been made a little clearer - we walked around the surrounding footpath quite a way before realising that the only entrance was from the road. The amphitheatre was well preserved and clearly been looked after.

Lovely site and museum: beautiful collection, well displayed, great outdoor garden and reconstruction of a Roman building, lots of events and fun activities... Then you can visit the remains a bit further, especially the amphitheatre. I'm looking forward to their summer Roman event personally!

Interesting museum about the Roman Legionary base of Caerleon and the history of the settlement. Lots to see and do and its a good base to start your exploration of the rest of the fortress remains elsewhere in the village.

Great day out. I think this was the 3rd time we've been in about 4 years. Went to the museum first. As the kids get older they absorb more information each time so always worth a revisit. This time they had people giving talks to the kids about the life of a roman and the weapons and armour etc which the kids enjoyed. Was a sunny day too so had a picnic here before heading back home. Great free day out although I still usually leave a donation

What can I say for here. I lost myself and I didn't want to leave here. Animations in the bath and music takes you somewhere. You are filling yourself with peace. There is screen explaining how the Roman's having bath and cleaning. You can find the real objects for cleaning. There are four computer games for children. Watch the screen and answer the questions. Lovely place.

The use of technology to make the baths come alive through sound and projections of water and swimmers was really good. And engaged the kids more than other sites we've been too. This is much cooler and calmer and relaxed the the Roman Baths in Bath. Son loved the dressing up element and there was a story teller there too in half term- brilliant.

Small but interesting archeological site. The excavation of the roman baths is rendered very well with informative panels, games for children and some audio-visual docs

Super museum with clearly laid out signage giving great details which brings the past alive. Interactive displays and videos which are excellent for children and grown ups. Roman culture is amazing and this facility really brings it to life. Recommended.

Popped in to have a quick look (partly as it's free) half an hour before closing - it's a great museum. It's been updated significantly since I last visited as a child. Note no toilets. Cadw staff lovely as ever.

Hologram in baths mesmerising but realistic Artifacts are comprehensive and very well explained. Facinating for young and old. Gladiator Armour great.
