The Bristol Harbour Railway (known originally as the Harbour Railway) was a standard-gauge industrial railway that served the wharves and docks of Bristol, England. The line, which had a network of approximately 5 mi (8.0 km) of track, connected the Floating Harbour to the GWR mainline at Bristol Temple Meads. Freight could be transported directly by waggons to Paddington Station in London. The railway officially closed in 1964.
In 1978, a heritage railway named the Bristol Harbour Railway was opened and operated by Bristol Industrial Museum. It uses approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) of the preserved line that runs adjacent to the River Avon. The line is a very popular visitor attraction in the city.

The Floating Harbour is the perfect place to spend the day. Have a lovely stroll along the canal and see all the ships and boats marooned there, and the groups of people paddling and rowing. Have a delicious lunch or dinner in any of the amazing restaurants in Wapping Wharf, and visit the M-Shed for some interesting expos and information about the canal and it's past as trading harbour.

I love the floating harbour.....such a busy place, full of energy and interest. Lovely to see it so full of boats. Lots of places to eat, drink or just people watch. The newly developed Gaol Steps area is excellent, take a walk around the new units in the old shipping containers....what an innovative use for them.

Great place to go with family at any time but looks particularly lovely in the warm weather. Great for relaxing and people watching, as other reviews have said. Wheelchair friendly on the whole. I''ve canoed down to and around the harbour from Netham lock in the past which is a very different way to see the harbour. Loads of things for kids to see and do (SS Great Britain, the Mathew, M-shed, harbour railway, loads of bars, cafes, restaurants, not to mention the main city centre 5 minutes walk away). Even better during the harbour festival in the Summer, which sees the harbour full of huge masted ships from all over the world and when the whole city centre has a vibrant carnival atmosphere with bands, street performers etc. Definately worth a visit. Not the best photo's but you get the gist!
