Theatre by the Lake is situated on the shores of Derwentwater in the Lake District in Keswick, Cumbria, England. It opened in 1999, replacing the mobile Century Theatre, and was made possible by an Arts Council Lottery Fund Grant. From May to November a resident company of up to 14 actors perform a Summer Season of six plays in repertory. The theatre also produces a Christmas show and two Spring shows (one in the Main House and one in the Studio). The theatre hosts festivals including the Words by the Water literature festival, the Jennings Keswick Jazz Festival, Keswick Film Festival and events in the Keswick Mountain Festival. In addition, the theatre offers a wide range of visiting drama, music, dance, talks, comedy and film.
The mobile touring Century Theatre first visited Keswick in 1961 and settled full-time in the Lakeside car park on the shores of Derwentwater in 1975. Outline planning permission was granted for a permanent building on the site in 1991, and in 1996 the Century Theatre was moved to Snibston Discovery Museum to make way for it. Work on the building began in 1998; the ground was broken by the theatre's patron, Dame Judi Dench. A significant proportion of the £6.5m building cost was contributed by the National Lottery. The name Theatre by the Lake was decided by public consultation and the first performance in the new building was on 19 August 1999.
An excellent theatre and a great Jeeves and Wooster play. Three actors with two of them taking on about 9 different roles between them... sometimes two roles each, simultaneously 😁. Cleverly done and loads of fun.

I saw great expectations and it was incredible. It is experience I will never forget. The seats are convey and there is enough room to stretch. They have a bar upstares and downstairs to get food and drink and have a shop with little cute things.

Love this little theatre which was also showing 2 art exhibitions when we were there (the ones by sixth form artists much better than professional imho😂). Saw Dial M for Murder last year and really enjoyed Jeeves and Wooster tonight - 3 actors doing ALL the roles! There are 2 productions most nights, ours in main hall and another in the studio. Think bigger theatre holds about 400 and seats are comfy with decent leg room. Also has a cafe with decent food. Would recommend a visit

Excellent like theatre in a lovely spot in keswick. Various productions on each week. Seating varies in price but good value. The theatre seating is small and close to the stage but not at all hindering the enjoyment of the performance. Staff we're very helpful and the catering on site is excellent. Toilets always clean and of a very high standard.

If you like a theatre trip with a difference This is for you a company produces both contemporary plays. And ones with thought and conscience . Comedy tragedy and all things in between . Meals available good disabled facilities. Book early busy at peak season . Helpful curtious staff nothing a problem. Enjoy.

Two of Alan Bennet's short TV plays about spies, fused into this very effective stage production. There's no facile moral judgement here, but rather, debate both sharp and profound about personal moral compass, duty and the nature of art. These historical (and living) characters are beautiful brought to life by the terrific acting and excellent production.
