Christchurch railway station is in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is on the Main North Line at Addington junction, and is the only remaining passenger railway station in the city: suburban passenger trains were cancelled due to lack of demand in the 1970s. It is the terminus of the South Island's two remaining long-distance passenger trains, the TranzAlpine and the Coastal Pacific.
The current station is the third to serve Christchurch. The two earlier stations were adjacent to each other on Moorhouse Avenue, a short distance to the east on the Main South Line, closer to the city centre.

We started our South Island round trip in winter from Christchurch. We took the train to Greymouth on our second day. It was a comfortable ride with good scenery and commentary along the way. However we found out later that while the scenery such as snow covered mountains was beautiful, it was also quite common in the South Island, such as at Wanaka or Mount Cook region. Therefore take the train if your budget could afford but this is not a must.

Quick check-in for TranzAlpine. Friendly staffs. Well maintained place. Not very accessible by public transport. If you're in hurry, definitely grab a cab or shuttle although it's not far from city centre.

When you travel to newzealand you must try tranzalpine. One of those unforgettable moments when in Newzealand. Along the way you will be presented with incredible scenery that you may never see. Start a clear river, green pastures and many more. Believe me, its totaly AMAZING!

I rode the Transalpine route. It was an awesome way to experience New Zealand and its peaks. The staff was friendly and the train was clean. I would recommend this trip for solo travellers, couples, and families. The location if the railway station is easy to find.

Small but very resourceful station. Staff are friendly and go out of their way to help out passengers. Plenty of free parking right opposite the station entrance and can accommodate 7m long campervans.
