Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo, sitting on 80 hectares of land, located on the outskirts of Christchurch. It opened in 1976, and is owned and operated by the Orana Wildlife Trust, a registered charity. The aims of the Trust are to provide quality recreational opportunities for local people and visitors to Christchurch; conserve endangered native and exotic wildlife; educate visitors (especially children) about environmental and conservation issues; and support research relating to endangered animals.

The animals seemed well taken care of (which is very important to us), there was a good variety of native and foreign animal species. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the food was great and prepared in a reasonable amount of time. The only bad thing I have to say about our visit there was that the groundskeeping was quite awful. Pathways overgrown, the occasional tripping hazard across the path, and a lot of the landscaping seemed to be... Dead. It Almost made the experience feel cheap (in a bad way) just because of the maintenance. But if you're looking for a fun day with the kids, a date, or just taking a look for yourself, this is definitely a fun place to visit.
This park is amazing. We were able to interact with so many animals and watch the different animals at their feeding times. The staff are awesome and the layout is really easy navigate. Feeding the giraffes was a good animal bonding activity
What a great day out for the family. Friendly helpful staff. Reasonable entry fee for a full day of fun. You are given a map and times that the animals will be feed. I prefer arriving early as the animals appear more lively. I feed the giraffes which was an awesome experience. The Gorillas are a must see and are the only ones in NZ. They have orangutans as well at the moment visiting from Auckland zoo . A must see. There is a free shuttle that stop at various stops along the way. And it has a ramp for wheel chairs. also a great picnic area and playground. There is free bbq's to use as well as a shop where you can purchase food.highly recommend taking your family Strollers are a good idea for young ones as the park is huge and lots of walking.
This is the best Animal Park experience in the World. Wonderful folk taking great care of some amazing creatures in a fantastic environment. I've been to a lot of Zoo's and Parks all over the World this place is Great.
This park is so amazing. There is so much do see and do. There are over 400 animals in total. I loved the shuttle service and how they explained everything to you clearly. You also get to experience feeding girafes and other animals. Def going again. All love ♡
Amazing place!!! We had so much fun!! We did the lion experience which is a must as you get to see how big they really are!! We also got to feed the giraffes, rhinos and watch the cheetahs get fed. The weather wasn’t great, but we still had an incredible day. We also managed to catch a glimpse of a kiwi at feeding time. The animals look well taken care of which is good. This is a definite must to visit. It is out of the way so you may feel like you are going the wrong way.
Fabulous day - the feeding times are great as you can get quite up close to the animals. They are well looked after and the staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. Food was reasonably priced and well cooked. The park is extremely large, and although initially it looks overgrown, in places, I liked it as it gave the place character. Wear good walking shoes. We did the lion experience and it was just amazing! Very highly recommended! As it is run 100% as a charitable trust, their breeding programme and what they want to achieve is a credit to them. I will be going back!
We had a really nice afternoon there. Some of the enclosures are unused and look a bit rundown, but there were plenty of other animals and the gorilla enclosure is amazing. Taking one of the free little coach tours around the park is definitely recommended while there. The staff are knowledgeable and very friendly.
There's something special about this Park. The workers & volunteers seem to genuinely care and enjoy the work they do, it shows and adds to the warm feel this park has. We really enjoyed the gorilla enclosure and the shuttle was a great option of getting around the Park. I wouldn't bother paying to get a close-up of the lions, as you get as good a view from outside the enclosure.
Great experience! Not so many animals but the park itself is great. Took about 2 hours of slowly rambling to see everything. Sunny warm weather made this visit unforgettable. Absolute relaxation. Lots of entertainment for kids. Good cafe with a big choice of snacks. Highly recommended!
I hadn't been to Orana Park since I was a lot younger and it's still as magical as I remember. I had a blast hanging out with the animals and watching them feed and interact with the keepers. It was a brilliant day. I haven't been on the lion encounter yet but from watching it from a distance even then it was an awesome experience.
It was good to see the animals up close. The gorillas were impressive and cougars close to the fence. Rhinos amazing. Giraffe enclosure very cool with the feeding platform. I will go again in the afternoon.
Really enjoyed our visit. Great place really feels like your amongst the animals. Staff were super friendly. Topped off buy great food and fast service. I would highly recommend a visit if your in Christchurch
I was sad to see I couldn't get close enough for a giraffe hug. They have changed it since I used to live there before the earthquakes. Still brilliant to be home and to feed them. I will always be back.
Went on a freezing cold day, accidentally ended up watching the lion feeding and then followed the keepers around the various feedings for the rest of the afternoon! Great way to learn more about the amazing things going on behind the scenes. Need to go back on a warmer day to see the rest as we ran out of time!!
