The Mercury Theatre is a theatre in Colchester, producing highly regarded original work under the title "Mercury Productions"and also receiving touring shows. The theatre has two auditoria, and is led by Tracey Childs (Executive Producer and Joint Chief Executive), Steve Mannix (Executive Director and Joint Chief Executive) and Ryan McBryde (Creative Director). The theatre also contains The Digby Gallery, which showcases local art.
In 1968, the Colchester New Theatre Trust was formed to identify a site for a new theatre and to oversee its constructions. The Mercury Theatre, designed by Norman Downie, was opened on 10 May 1972, after a successful fund-raising campaign, supported by a large grant from the Borough Council. It originated with the Colchester Repertory Company, formed in 1937.

Normally a great theatre with quality productions, however "Europe after the rain" was a very poor offering at the Studio. If we hadn't read the brochure, it would have been pretty well impossible to understand what this awful play was about, other than a script containing as many variations on the F-word as the author could fit in. Come on, Mercury, you can, and often do give us much better quality than this disappointing rubbish.

Saw Prince tribute ..Mark Anthony and it was brilliant. Great performance and a very enjoyable evening. Bit rsque and a few of the audience offended but if you know Prince you should of expected it...wouldn't be tribute to him if a clean show!! 😁

Great theatre, you get a fantastic view of the stage from everywhere and plenty of legroom for a change. Just watched "The Play That Goes Wrong" there and wasn't disappointed, funniest thing I've seen in a long, long time!

Great theatre, good location close to car parks and restaurants. I would not recommend the restaurant attached to the theatre. The food was not good, the fact that only 2 tables where occupied is indicative of local opinion. I'd definitely visit again, and eat elsewhere.

I've spent a lot of time at the mercury doing shows and I can say it is the best stage i have ever had the pleasure of performing on. The staff are lovely, the food is great, the tech is up to date, and I'm sure that the new facilities coming with the mercury rising campaign will make it an even better stage to perform on. If you have the chance to work at the Mercury I would recommend you 100%. I cannot wait until I next work at the Mercury Theatre
