This palace is quite unique in a sense that there are no walls surrounding it. It is right in the city and vehicles can pass through it. It is filled with tourist. The flag will indicate whether the queen, crown prince etc are in residence. Do not miss the 2hrs change of shift for the Royal Guard. Don’t lean against the wall of the Palace insight of the Royal Guard. Trust me.

Fantastic to watch the changing of the guard. The laidback/free nature of the Danes is perfectly captured here - no gates and vehicles can drive through the centre square of the palace. I also enjoyed the palace tour.

We were so so lucky to witness the whole procedure in changing of palace guards at 12.30pm! Unlike the ones in London who are dressed in red, the Copenhagen palace guards are very darkly dressed with black oversized furry hats! I was informed that Our lovely Australian Princess Mary lives here with her troop, and few other palaces! So central in the middle of the capital city! So close to the famous mermaid too!

changing of the guard happens at noon. Get there a few minutes early as once it starts they have you in a specific area. In early February it was quite cold and damp but still well worth the half hour to see the ceremony. I can imagine in summer the crowds might be a bit extreme.

Great tourist place! Nice square and palace. Must be visited at 12:00 when there's a guard change!

It's a beautiful palace surrounded by 4 buildings of palace. Change of guard is the main attraction here which happens at 12 pm or during the last royal person leaves the palace and it's empty. Palace has the kings statue in the middle and a church facing the palace with a large amazing dome.

Right in the the city near Copenhagen Admiral Hotel. We were lucky when we reached at around noon time on Wednesday where there was a simple Changing of Guard Parade at the middle of Square. The Palace was unique in that it is completely opened where everyone can just walk through with no wall separating the palace from the visitors.. even cars drive right through the square. While visiting this square, please also walk along the nearby water front for about 10mins to the famous Mermaid statue, from Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

Cool square. Watched royal guards walking there. They "pssed" each other when there was a time to make a turn and go back. A good view on cathedral from here. Also nice monument in the middle of the square. Wonderful buildings which look the same for the first time.

If you enjoy a bit of history then this is the place for you. My son enjoyed seeing the guards on duty. We didnt get to go inside all the places however we did go inside the church and it is absolutely beautiful. Outside is spectaular but inside is just an amazing sight. Its along the way to visit the little mermaid to so makes for a nice walk in the sun.

Nice for taking photos, especially from the water in direction of Frederics Church. Also the guards are a good motive. We went here when the weather was good so the place was crowded. Best in the the morning I guess.

We didn’t take the time to go inside this beauty only enjoyed it from the outside, however we timed it properly to watch the changing of the guards. And what a sight to see! It was perfect place for our little to watch such a tradition. Possibly our favorite stop in our journey through Copenhagen. We were each able to learn something new from this unique experience, and I think my kids 8, 6 and 5 will each hold a piece of this adventure close.

Stunning interiors, a Palace with a wow factor. Well maintained. The square outside is huge and lively. Close to the waterfront. We were lucky enough to see the change of guards. Entry fee applicable. Gift shop available. Credit cards accepted. Free entry with the Copenhagen card. Must see.

Interesting plaza surrounded by royal residences. Center piece is a statue. Royal Guards will be present in front of residences that are occupied.

One of my best visit. Such great people working there. The best guide I could've expected. Being the only English speaker of the group, I got a private tour, full of interesting information. The parliament is interesting and the Danish politics is quite a thing and concept. It made my day.

Visited Amalienborg during our trip to Copenhagen. A beautiful sight from the outside. We also went inside to visit the museum. Here you can find all kinds of information about the Danish royal family and how they used to live. Even on a sunny day it wasn't hot inside because they made sure to place fans in most of the rooms. Definitely worth visiting if you're near!

Great if want to see some amazing architecture and buildings. Otherwise not alot happening there. I took lots of pictures and also cool to see the guards.

For queen and country, and all that. If you like a monarchy, this one is one of the best. Awesome! How does the royal guard stand so well?

Only visited this palace (May 2015) on the outside, approached from Marble Church. This palace court has unique architecture and of course a good place to take photos. Don't forget the guards with blue-white uniform (take their photo if you want but I prefer to use candid/large zoom-in method). Be careful when approaching the statue: I was confused about which way is the pedestrians and which is for the cars, in the end don't get hit by any vehicles there.

I'm a Monarchy nostalgic. I love it. And Copenhagen is another place which strengthened my belief in the amazing and unifying power of Monarchy. Amalienborg Palace is another must-visit of the Danish royal capital. Very beautiful and very refined.

Nice plaza and we'd timed it perfectly to see the changing of the guard (daily at 12pm, but I'd recommend getting there around 11:30 for a good spot). The floor of the plaza is marked with lines where the guards walk to do the changing - I recommend standing in the square that runs around the statue, in the corner facing south. Then, after the new guards walk in and disappear into the palace, there will be a 6-7 minute wait, during that wait walk north and stand near the guards entrance west of Frederiksgade, where you'll be able to watch the guards do a change there too.
