Dallas Zoo (also called the Dallas Zoological Park) is a 106-acre (43Â ha) zoo located 3Â mi (5Â km) south of downtown Dallas, Texas, in Marsalis Park. Established in 1888, it is the oldest and largest zoological park in Texas and is managed by the non-profit Dallas Zoological Society. It is home to over 2,000 animals representing 406 species. It is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
In 2009, the Dallas City Council unanimously approved the construction of the 11 acres (4.5Â ha) Giants of the Savanna Exhibit, and also voted to privatize the zoo. In recent years, attendance has surged. In 2015, the zoo achieved an annual attendance of 1 million+ visitors for the first time. The Dallas Zoological Society is supported by over 25,500 membership households. The DZS manages all fundraising, membership, special events, food services, retail operation, volunteer programs, marketing, and public relations for the zoo under management contract with the City of Dallas.
Firs time for us to go to the Dallas Zoo. My 2 toddlers LOVED it! Best part for me was seeing them feed the giraffes and for them... Well, they loved their tiger light up Bubble wands. I will definitely be signing up to be a member. Looking forward to more Zoo time with my little ones. Also, all the employees were so great and very helpful!!! Good job Dallas Zoo

Me and the missus had a Dallas City Pass. This was one of the attractions. And we had fun. Lots of fun. We went when it was quiet and we basically had to the Zoo to ourselves, which added to the fun. The animals were out and relatively active for the most part which was good to see. From the elephants to penguins to gorillas and Birds. It was off peak so various parts of the Zoo were shut down or closed and that's why I've only given 4 stars because we didn't experience it all. A good 4hrs worth of fun for family.

It was well laid out. There was more overhead coverage to protect from the sun. The new private ownership has really improved the place. They have a larger animal collection and they look well taken care of. They also have clean public restrooms and plenty of restaurant choices. The food is pretty good, yet a bit pricey.

We live 3 hours north of Dallas and planned a weekend trip. It was our family’s first time visiting and we got to take advantage of the penguin days discount admission price. This is a very nice and well kept zoo. The staff is super friendly and so full of knowledge about the animals and more than willing to answer any questions you may have. We only got to see a small amount of animals due to cold temperatures (so no way at all it was the zoos fault) we still had a great day and we do plan on visiting again when the weather is warmer.

We are big zoo people and this truly an AMAZING ZOO. We went during penguin days, and it was moderately empty which was good for viewing the animals. The monorail was closed and some animals were off exhibit, but the penguin day price of $7 made up for it. The animals are like none we've ever seen by how social and active they seemed to be. The same goes for the zoo keepers coming to talk about some animals, like the gorillas and elephants. Also, the exhibits are more of a habitat rather than a cage; evidently yielding to a happier animal. It's clear how well Dallas takes care of their zoo, friendly animals and staff for an unbeatable experience. We will absolutely return.

Although it was a fun place to visit the zoo setup itself was not impressive. This review is based on the comparison of the Dallas zoo with the other zoos around the country. The zoo has two separate sides to it, the Wild Africa side and the main side that is connected through a tunnel. All the big animals are on wild Africa side. The animal habitats are big but covered by rocks on all sides and has just a small display window/lookout which makes it hard to see the animals. And since the habitats are covered with rock on the outside it feels like you're walking in a nature trail vs enjoying the animals in the zoo. Here are some recommendations for when you visit - It's best if you park in the South parking lot, this is the closest entrance to the tunnel so you have easy access to both sides. - Visit the zoo in the morning, from our experience many times when you visit the zoo in the afternoon the animals are not as active and are napping. If you want to make the best of it visit in the morning and also that helps you visit the animals before the shows start and make note of the timings for your favorite animal encounters. - Must visit the Wild Africa first. This part of the zoo has Elephants, Lion, Hippos, Zebras, Cheetah, Giraffe, Gorillas, Apes, Warhog... The main side of the zoo has birds, smaller monkeys, bugs, reptiles and children's play area. Since it has some indoor sections it's better to do these later when the sun is bright so you get some shelter from the sun. - If you have a large family and plan on going to the zoo at least twice a year it's more economical to become a member.

Dallas Zoo has really improved and are coming up with new trails and experiences for their guests. I am a Passport member and go many times throughout the year. Parking is usually very easy and not too far from the main entrance. I really like the members only entrance and digital membership card they now offer. The animals do seem to always be active and engaging. Meals are quite expensive ($8 for cheeseburger), so I suggest eating before coming if your pocketbook is tight. I typically get at least a giant pretzel for about $3. If you live in the Dallas area, I suggest at least a basic membership which covers parking ($10) and admission ($15 adults). It's good for an entire year and don't have to feel pressured into visiting everything to make admission worthwhile.

This is a wonderful place to visit in Dallas. I had a blast with my family and we loved walking to the different areas. There is a variety of animals and were all easily seen. The prices aren't too bad and there is plenty to see! I would recommend visiting during the cooler months as it can get quite hot in the summer.

Wonderful zoo! I’m from out of town and the staff was amazing!! I am here for a family celebration of life and the kindness we have been shown has been huge in assisting in this celebration! This experience has been above and beyond! Beautiful place. I wish the other guests were respectful, but the zoo can’t control everyone! Thank you for the experience!

I love the zoo and my kids do too. This place has gotten so much better over the last 5 years. The enclosures are so much better for the animals. And they have added cool things like feeding giraffes! If you want, you can also bring your own cooler and have a picnic there. There are plenty of tables under huge trees for you and your kids. And for the dads out there, they also serve beer! How awesome is that!?! To get the most bang for your buck, I would purchase the Dallas Zoo membership online before you go. This way you don't have to pay for parking and you get to skip the long lines. The weekends are busy so it's best to go early or after lunch on those days. Have fun!

My family LOVES coming here! If you're local, a season pass is 100% recommend! We go a couple times a month so the pass for sure pays for itself. We love going in the different weather's and different times of years to see how the animals behave differently. The zoo is always clean and we'll kept. The employees are so friendly and wonderful. We love it!

The kid water area makes the whole day perfect for my little ones. It's what we do last to top off of the day. Make sure to bring swimsuits and towels cause they kids will get soaked. It's perfect to cool them off after a long, hot morning walking around seeing the animals.

Season pass membership is the way to go if you love a good Zoo with lots to see and do, and get early entry on certain days, train rides and discounted food. The exhibits are clean and comfortable and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Having spoken with caretakers, you can tell they love the animals like family and endearingly call them all by their given names. Great opportunities for good photos and regular show and tells around the park. Plenty of shaded and indoor areas to get a break from the heat, and several eateries for basic items. There's even a campground for overnight stays! Strollers are available for rent and of course there are plenty of souvenirs. There's also a large kids playground that will keep the little zoologists busy or spend the last bit of energy for a quiet ride home. Night time and seasonal events are enjoyable and the crowds are well manageable. It's never felt over crowded, but can definitely get busy at peak times. Pro tip: Get a membership and arrive at 8am and the park is all yours! I've loved watching the little ones grow up like Bahati the lioness cub and playing hide and seek with her! Highly recommended!

I attended this zoo as a field trip chaperone. It wasn't a bad experience, but maybe only a mediocre one. I appreciated that all of the exhibits felt natural and the animals appeared comfortable in them. There were several enrichment experiences that we were able to see and do. The size of the zoo was perfectly manageable in the time we had for the field trip, however if I had paid full price we wouldn't have had a half day worth of things to see and do. We were here for three hours including lunch time and we finished the entire zoo in that time. The giraffe feeding experience was really cool and unique. The kids also really enjoyed the cheetahs and the reptile house. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and they seemed to really enjoy interacting with the kids.

I really love the continued improvements at the zoo. The new, fairly new, Serengeti exhibit is amazing. It was my first time ever feeding a giraffe and being thrilled to be able to let one! The choices for dining are pleasant and after a good deal of walking my friends and I chose the air conditioned cafe which also had outdoor seating if you prefer. Be sure and look online to see which events you want to participate in so you can plan ahead. ENJOY!

There is something for everyone to see at this zoo, from the smallest insect to the largest elephant. Feed giraffes by hand and see them with zebras and elephants in large, free-roaming areas in the Africa exhibit. Large cats and warthogs are also interesting there. Monorail is closed during extreme hot or cold weather, but worth the trip when open. Hippo exhibit is cloudy water with bad light by afternoon, but keeper talk in the afternoon brings them up to be seen. If you like birds, you can feed some by hand in the Children's area aviary, with both seeds and worms, and they will land on your hand, arm or shoulder to eat. Lots of other fun activities there, too, for smaller children. Summer is hot but most areas are shaded and some include misting stations, plus enough air conditioned exhibits or restaurants spread around to cool off.
Andrew WardJul 2, 2018
Great zoo that allows you to get close to the animals, which are in large habitats that allow them to roam as well. My personal favorite feature is that you can feed the giraffes! They were sweet, like very tall doggos. Overall, the zoo is walkable and even has areas to cool down if the heat gets to you. Also loved that most exhibits had a volunteer or zoo trainer available answering questions or just informing about animal behavior. I was lucky enough to catch the hippo exhibit when the trainers were feeding and explaining all things hippo. Very cool.
rebecca warkJun 27, 2018
It's a small zoo but you could realistically spend the day there if you take your time- and there is NO ZOO SMELL!! Gosh that was worth 3 stars by itself. But I wasn't impressed with the food options. It was pretty much just sugar and salt (which I understand because they just want to get you to buy more drinks) but the foods weren't even kid friendly or healthy... However, the staff was very nice and knowledgeable. I loved that there was a station to feed the giraffes.

It was pretty good. My 18 mo old had a good time. The chimps were entertaining as always. I'd see go earlier in the day because of the crazy heat. Make sure you take your little one to the children's zoo, the bird show was fun. Bring your own water because it's 2bucks a can!

Very cool.
