Castle House in Dedham, Essex, England was the home of Sir Alfred Munnings from 1919 till his death in 1959. Architecturally the building contains a mixture of Tudor and Georgian elements.
Shortly after his death his widow established The Violet Munnings Trust Fund in 1962 to establish and run an Art Museum in Castle House, in accordance with Munnings' wish that his pictures and estate be left to the nation. In 1965 Castle House Trust was formed whereby the house itself, surrounding land, all of Munnings' paintings still in the possession of Lady Munnings, and further amounts of money and investments were made over to the Trust to form the basis of a museum of his works.

The range of works on display goes far beyond the equestrian portraits for which he is best known. Outside you can visit the thatched studio he erected in the grounds which contains all his props and painting paraphernalia.

From Toulouse Lautrec style paintings to beautiful portraits. There is something here that most art lovers would appreciate. The cafe is pleasant and the food is good too.

Delicious food served in an idyllic setting. A selection of mouth watering light lunches which can be accompanied by interesting and flavoursome alcoholic drinks. Efficient and friendly staff who compliment the ambience of the peaceful, rural surroundings. An ideal way to end a visit to the museum.

I thought the Munnings Art Museum was absolutely wonderful. The primary purpose of this museum is to display the work of Afred Munnings and his work is varied and enjoyable. The bonus of visiting this place was the lovely welcome and friendly relaxed atmosphere created by the volunteer staff. A lovely half day out.
