The Hugh Lane Gallery, officially Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and originally the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, is an art museum operated by Dublin City Council and its subsidiary, the Hugh Lane Gallery Trust. It is in Charlemont House (built 1763) on Parnell Square, Dublin, Ireland. Admission is free.
The gallery was founded by noted art collector Sir Hugh Lane on Harcourt Street on 20 January 1908, and is the first known public gallery of modern art in the world. Lane met the running costs, while seeking a more permanent home. New buildings were proposed in St. Stephens Green, and as a dramatic bridge-gallery over the River Liffey, both proposed designs by Sir Edwin Lutyens, both unrealised. Lane did not live to see his gallery permanently located as he died in 1915 during the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. Since 1933 it has been housed in Charlemont House.

The Francis Bacon studio was really well reconstructed and impressive. A small selection of other works but nicely curated. Upstairs had some modern exhibitions. Overall exceeded my expectations. Would recommend!

I love this place.. It's one of the great hidden gems knocking around our city.

Certainly a lovely place to visit for adults but nothing for children there. I was surprised that there wasn't even an activity page to do or even a colouring corner would have been fine.

In early February 2010, I went to the cafe at this gallery with my college and I paid 20 euros for the pastry and drink but I didn't get my change back. My mentor, one of staff and one of my fellow students said to me that I gave the lady €5 but I didn't give her a fiver. I just gave her €20. Then I told the lady that I gave her €20. She said to me that I didn't give her €20 and I said to her, "Yes I did." I wasn't lying. I was very upset about it and my €20 just got robbed. It was the worst trip I ever had. I am never coming back to the cafe at this gallery ever again! I'm sure there are lots of robbers in some shops, restaurants or anywhere. Don't worry I still like the gallery. It's a very nice gallery.
