St. Michan's Church is a Church of Ireland church located in Church Street, Dublin, Ireland. The first Christian chapel on this site dated from 1095, and operated as a Catholic church until the Reformation. The current church dates from 1686, and has served Church of Ireland parishioners in Dublin for more than 300 years. The church is known for its vaults, which contain a number of 'mummified' remains.
A true gem of history, encroached on all sides by huge buildings which have buried this ancient part of the city beneath their foundations. Inside, the church is austerely beautiful, but most visitors come to see the famous crypt. Excitingly accessed through a trapdoor in the churchyard, and down a flight of steep stone steps, there is a visceral display of mummified corpses going back hundreds of years, which have been preserved through time in the perfectly dry, cold atmosphere.
Probably my favourite historical thing to do in Dublin. Great tour of the crypts underneath the church with bags of very interesting history. The tour guide I've had on a number of occasions is absolutely brilliant, really brings it to life and has a wealth of knowledge. Great value too. Opening times are a little restrictive so check before you go.
The (small but very nice) crypts were great. The guide gave a lot of historical background info on the crypts in a very entertaining way. I don't think there are tours "at the top of the hour", just hang around in the church for a while and wait for someone to yell "OK, who's here to see the mummys?!"
Definitely worth visiting! Tour Guide is great, a lot of history and it is spooky!
This a great bit if history for everyone. The vaults under st Michans church house the mummified corpses of some famous and historical figures. The guides are great and enthusiastic. It's really cheap by comparison to other tours in Dublin, so whether you're Irish or a tourist this is definitely somewhere to visit when you're in Dublin.
It's tough to rate this tiny church compared to all the other cathedrals we've seen in Dublin. Should you go? Yes, especially if you can catch the organist practicing. If you like the creepy crypts and mummified bodies yes, you should go. It's a quick visit and interesting enough to warrant the trip. Getting into the vaults /crypt area is through a tight low door with steep steps. If you are very tall or broad shouldered, it might be a bit awkward but it is doable.
The church is beautiful, well worth a look around first. Loved the crypts! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and quirky which added to the atmosphere. Would recommend a visit to anyone
One of the favorite things we did in Dublin! The crypt is so cool and the mummies were absolutely fascinating. Our tour guide through the crypt was my favorite, loved his dark humor and learned so much.
Beautiful church with lots of history and apparently it has mummies; although I didn't get to see them so will have to come back and check it out by myself.
Slightly off the main tourist route I guess but worth a visit. The mummies aren't mummies in the normal sense but the preservation of the bodies is very interesting and the guide extremely entertaining.
