Great spot to hang out in the city, although it can get very crowded here!
The legend says that Orlando saved Dubrovnik from the Saracens whilst defeatin them near the Island Lokrum.
One of the landmarks of Dubrovnik - Orlando's Column or Pillar is a stone column with the figure of Roland/Orlando, legendary Charlemagne's knight bearing a sword and shield, carved into the column. It was sculpted by Bonino di Milano and domestic master Antun Dubrovčanin in 1419 in Gothic style. The statue is a symbol of the freedom of Dubrovnik and the flag of the Republic always flied upon this column during ceremonies, while government proclamations and announcements were read from the column's pedestal. The column pragmatically served different purposes as the forearm of Orlando was the standard measure of the Ragusan cubit shown more accurately by a line in the base of the column ("lakat", 1 Ragusan "lakat"/cubit/elbow = 51,2 cm). Today, a ceremony before the Orlando and the raising of the "Libertas" flag on the column marks the opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival every year. Restoration being in progress, so "Libertas" flag, in recent years, is raised on the nearby wooden temporary column.
Its called Orlando's Column because the guy looks like Orlando Bloom.
Great landmark and street. Everyone knows Dubrovnik is beautiful. Must see.
Much had been said about this column. It is a symbolic statue of a knight. Right in front of a clocktower and a church. It is a single entity on a pedastrian walkway.
