The Umgeni River Bird Park is a bird zoo located in Durban, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Designed and built by Dr. Alan Abrey in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984. The park was owned privately by a group of bird lovers who wanted to educate others about birds from around the world. It was run by Alan Abrey until his retirement in 1997, and in those years the artwork for the park (guidebook illustrations, park maps, and so forth) were done by his daughter Robyn Abrey.

If you haven't yet been to the Umgeni River Bird Park it is well worth making a trip there! Something for everyone; be it sitting in one of the enclosures and watching the magnificent and brightly coloured bird life filling the trees around you or even sitting on your shoulder; or walking through and admiring the wide variety of local and international species; spending some time in the nursery with the new arrivals; or sitting having an amazing cappuccino or beverage while the kids play on the swings, jungle gym or jumping castle. A must though is to go watch the bird show. Really a treat for young and old. We went with the family ranging from our 2 year old right through to great granny at 89! We will be back for sure.

A most beautiful sanctuary set in a lush tropical park that provides lovely shade on a hot day. Most birds are in cages, but you can enter some larger aviaries, too. And some birds are just flying around freely. The free flight bird show (11 and 2pm) is great fun. There are play areas for kids, a cafe, and you can buy foof to feed the lorakeets which readily hop onto your hand. A really nice place! There's a bit of refurbishment going on, and one path is closed to give the birds privacy for breeding. Fair enough, but it means you can't see all of the area and birds at the mo (April 2018), hence 4 not 5 stars.

Pleasantly surprised by how clean and large the park was! The staff was also super friendly. I will definitely be back with more family members.

Amazing place. Expected a quick half hour walk around and ended being an hour 'n a half! R55 (for adults) well spent! Bird show is Tuesday to Sunday so a bit disappointed we got there on a Monday but still well worth it!!

It must be at least 20 years since I last visited the bird park, but wow - I was impressed. The park is beautifully maintained, clean, neat and fun. There is a wonderful selection of birds in open air enclosures, aviaries and caged areas. The setting is gorgeous, with a natural waterfall backdrop. And when kids need a break there is a very nice (but sandy) playground and a small, buy decent kiosk with a good selection of basic meals (burgers and chips), scones, ice creams, snacks etc. We will definitely be back.

Zoo for birds. Lots of interesting birds to see. Makes for a nice outing and it won't take the whole day so one can do other things as well. Probably plan to spend at least an hour and half there. Nice for kids

Still a great place to come, thanks to some great renovations in recent years. They also had a jumping castle on a Saturday and the bird show was a lot of fun. My kids had lots of fun looking at all the birds!

Great for family outing. Some really interesting/exotic birds to see. Affordable. Nice cafe with light meals (sandwiches etc) also at a reasonable price.
