Standen is an Arts and Crafts house located to the south of East Grinstead, West Sussex, England. The house and its surrounding gardens belong to the National Trust and are open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building.
Between 1891 and 1894 architect Philip Webb, who was a friend of William Morris, designed the house for a prosperous London solicitor, James Beale, his wife Margaret, and their family of seven children. The house is constructed in the Wealden vernacular style with sandstone quarried from the estate and locally made bricks and tiles. The interior is decorated with Morris carpets, fabrics and wallpapers, with furnishings also by Morris, and the garden complements the beauty of the house. From the start the house had electric power, originally generated by a donkey engine in a shed by the old barn. The house still has its original electric light fittings, designed by W. A. S. Benson.
This N. T. House and Garden is a real gem. Beautiful Arts and Crafts house and exceptional gardens, recently restored to the plans made by the original owner Mrs Beale, who was a collector of rare plants from around the world. Wonderful setting with fine views of the surrounding countryside. There are woodland walks too and an imaginative children's play area. Lots to see and do plus a good cafe serving hot and cold food and drinks. A property not to be missed!

A great national trust. A bit commercial in the tea rooms. But the house has a warm and friendly feel. It feels lives in and the staff and VOLUNTEERS (How much does the ceo and others earn?) Are fantastic. Ill be back.

Beautiful house and surrounding gardens - excellent for the whole family as there is plenty of place to run around outside. The staff were friendly and helpful and the cafe is lovely. Perfect for a Sunday day out. Also great if you like William Morris as a lot of his designs and patterns decorate the house.

Although a cold winters day, this was a very welcoming place. The cafe was exceptional, the used book shop quite large and comfy with a big leather chair in the middle, and heating. Will return in the Spring to try one of the many walks. This place is a real find, but the intimate atmosphere may be lost if overcrowded in high season. We'll see.

Standen is the best Arts and Crafts house in south central England. It was built in the late 1800s by James and Margaret Beale, a solicitor for a railroad company and his wife. The house was designed by famous Arts and Crafts archetect , Philip Webb, and contains Morris & Co interiors, a wonderful billiard room, and lighting that was put in at the end of the gas light era with lamp shade by White Friars. The guides are very informative, both about the house and about the family who lived there. The guided tour took about 30 minutes. As with most National Trust properties, there is a charming cafe with food and drinks.

Standen is a lovely National Trust property to visit. The house is very well taken care of and there's so much information available to read about the family - the conservatory has a load of books you can sit and read. There's a fascinating room all about wallpaper and the process of re-decorating an old house. The cafe and shop are sweet, though don't expect main or large meals at the cafe - it's just soup, coffee, cake and the like. The gardens are lovely and I think there are walks in the surrounding area to try as well.

Fantastic day out really helpful staff. Paid 2nd visit today staff superb great knowledge and really eager to share the information about house with you. This is a really interesting house with loads of history. Fantastic place to bring children to learn about William Morris. Psst don't have to be young to learn about him.

Spectacular tulips in mid April. Nice house ... which goes on much further than you would expect from the first few rooms. Pay attention to the wallpaper! Parking is a bit of a nightmare on popular weekends, but there's a lot on the right near the entrance that is only a few minutes walk from the house, and can save a bunch of time.

Went on a rainy day, so decided to give garden a miss, and visit house instead. The house has been left as if you are a house guest of the Beales (for whom the house had been built in 1892-4 in the Arts and Crafts style), and the family has just stepped outside into the gardens! The house is definitely worth a visit, to enjoy the substantial gardens I recommend a dry day!

Nice place. There are lots of newt and dragonfly larvae in the pond. We actually watched one larvae emerging as dragonfly. Incredible. Beautiful garden. Nice food in the cafe. Lots of bees.

At least with this NT property you do get to see a lot of the house most of the bedrooms are open. There are informative talks but they do go on a bit. It's mainly a 1920's house with furniture from the William Morris era but as I am an NT member I go for a wander not because of what it is. Though you'll find an Oliver Cromwell painting downstairs due to a family link. House is on a large plot bur although the gardens/terrace by the house are nice there's not a lot of flowers compared to Emmets Garden. I thought the tea room cakes were a bit pricey.

Always enjoy my visits to Standen House. This year's exhibition was extremely interesting. Coffee and cakes in the barn after a walk around the grounds was just what we needed.

Great for fans of Arts and Crafts furnishings and decoration in the William Morris style. A nice change too from the older NT buildings. Nice grounds to walk around with lovely views. A spacious restaurant with good food. Recommended.

Lovely house with knowledgeable volunteers, it was a flying visit for us while on a walk so we didn't see all the gardens but what we saw was beautifully maintained. Lots of Morris designs throughout and a good exhibition on the WRENs. Looking forward to going back again soon, hopefully more of the servants quarters will have been restored then.
