Gilmerton Cove is a series of underground passageways and chambers hand-carved from sandstone located beneath the streets of Gilmerton, an ex-mining village, now a southeastern suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland.
A five-year collaborative project between Gilmerton Heritage Trust and The City of Edinburgh Council allowed the newly restored Cove to open in 2003 as an educational resource for the community as well as a place to visit.

A really underrated place, the lady doing the tours is truly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the caves and we had several very interesting discussions with her. I don't think a lot of people really know about this and it's a shape because it's definitely a place to visit.

Amazing that this is in a busy part of town. Definitely worth a visit. Guide is very informative. Parking is an issue so I used a local supermarket car park

This hidden gem is well worth the short bus ride from downtown Edinburgh. The guide was fantastic and the site is a very interesting underground complex of hand dug tunnels.

Fascinating and well curated. Guide was lovely. Would be intrigued for authorities to support the research investigating this site.

It was my Sister who stumbled across their website by pure chance. No mention at all on other Edinburgh Visitors Attractions websites and if you happened to be in Gilmerton Cove you would be forgiven for not noticing it. On the outside it just looks like another cottage in a row of simular looking cottages. What you have to see is a network of man made tunnels and caves which spread out like tree roots right under the village. What you will see is a mere fraction of the site, but even this fraction takes a good hour to explore. They were re - discovered when Foundations were being dug for a new supermarket, and that is a fair distance away from the enterance to the site. So who dug the tunnels and caves and why?. That's a good question with no good answer. Some think the celts, some the Knight's Templers, some think it was Pirates others a hideaway for the Covenanters and some it was Aliens, that last one is a joke but give it time😁. I am not going to spoil your visit by describing everything that is to be seen, there has to be a little mystery after all😊. Tours are by appointment only. Monday to Friday 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm. Saturday and Sunday 12pm, 2pm and 3pm. No dedicated car park but several car parks dotted around the village. Also no cafe but again lots of catering establishments for all tastes in the village. Good family day out in my opinion which will create more questions that it gives answers. A Great pity that it doesn't get the publicity it deserves.
