The Museum of Childhood is a museum which houses a collection of children's toys and playthings, situated on the Royal Mile, in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was the first museum in the world to specialise in the history of childhood.
The collection, which ranges from the 18th to the 21st century, was originally the work of Patrick Murray (1908-1981), an Edinburgh Councillor and passionate collector of toys and childhood memorabilia. It first opened to the public in 1955 and moved to its present home on Edinburgh's royal mile in 1957 housed in what was formerly the Salvation Army's hall.

Well worth a visit. Free to enter and enjoy. Not a very large building so you can go round it in an hour but still some nice things to stir your memories of your own childhood perhaps. Only a 10 minute walk from the large "traditional" museum in Chambers Street.

This is an awesome museum. They tell stories about kids in past and their education, toys, clothes and many of interesting things. Or is about 5 floors and in each floor there is a number of sections represent one thing such as toys. The museum offer old clothes for visitors to try them out. Additionally, there is a gifts shop.

This place is truly amazing for children and adults alike. Five floors full of toys and games from all periods of history. Every exhibit is lovingly displayed and evokes memories of your childhood. Some of these toys will probably never be seen anywhere else and it is amazing how they have amassed such a collection. I lived it here.

What a wonderful place to visit, whilst visiting this beautiful city. This museum has a lot to offer, and it does not take long to view the exhibits. So this will not delay your visit to other points of interest in Edinburgh. This museum will bring your childhood memories to life. Enjoy

Lovely museum, bigger than I expected! It tells you the history of childhood and apparently it's the first of it kind. It's rather exhaustive, I thought. You can learn about children's education, play, hobbies, etc. There are whole sections dedicate to dolls, board games, miniature objects, literature, and so on. Very interesting! It's great to go with children, too. It's rather interactive, especially the first section.

Charming, colourful museum which has lots to offer. It takes you through the history of play and education in childhood. I loved the original pieces from Edinburgh kindergarten and schools. However, the museum needs an update. The use of multi media and interactive games would make it more interesting. Insect repellent on the floor should be removed, might me harmful to younger children.

We spent a couple of hours at this free museum. The kids (5&7) had lots of things to do in nearly every room plus a trail.to do. My only criticism is as children of the 70's my husband and I would have liked more from that era but otherwise recommend for a short visit

Went May bank holiday 2018 with two young kids. I think best description is "it's OK". Perhaps a place for adults to reminisce rather than somewhere to entertain young children. There were a few toys in some of the galleries but missing pieces let things down a little. Shame.

I adore this place. The Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh is a delightful trip down memory lane, and a great insight into what children's lives were like before I was born too! There are a few little interactive things along the way. Great fun for the whole family!

Go back in time and see some of your old favourite toys... Look at the past with toys and games that taught the children... Great time to spend an hour or two.. Free but consider making a donation...

Very small but neat. Interesting section of child clothing and foreign toys. I stopped a few minutes to read a Miss Potter's book. Too many dolls and the girls in the lobby were too busy gossiping to each other to say bye. Keep growing, I'll be back.

This museum is so weird but pretty entertaining. Lots of interesting old toys and games. It’s really good if you like dolls.
