The Nelson Monument is a commemorative tower in honour of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is situated on top of Calton Hill, and provides a dramatic termination to the vista along Princes Street from the west. The monument was built between 1807 and 1816 to commemorate Nelson's victory over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and his own death at the same battle. In 1852 a mechanized time ball was added, as a time signal to shipping in Leith harbour. The time ball is synchronized with the One O'Clock Gun firing from Edinburgh Castle. The monument was restored in 2009.
The Royal Navy's White Ensign and signal flags spelling out Nelson's famous message "England expects that every man will do his duty" are flown from the monument on Trafalgar Day each year.

Some of the best views in the city. A good climb to the top and an interesting small exhibition to learn a little of the history too.

Great views over Edinburgh when the weather is nice and it's good for a quick lunchtime visit if you want something quick and cheap to do

360-degree views and a few monuments to explore. You can walk here from Edinburgh castle if you don’t mind the hill, it’s worth it for the view.

I visited Calton Hill in Edinburgh, it’s a nice small hill which you can still get Amazon view of Edinburgh. Looking down and over to see the views of Dynamilc Earth, Arthur Seat, Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh Castle and many more to see. The best bit of all is when I went up The Nelson Monument and that’s even a spectacular view, more higher up also it has a small museum inside which was interesting. The only thing I was wondering about is how am I ment to get down once I’m up there because the steps are like a stair case going all around and there was a lot of steps lol. Once I was up there, the view of Edinburgh and beyond blow me away, it was fantastic to walk round in a circle and to see everything. Once coming down I was very causios but I took it very slowly taking each step to get down. After getting to the bottom I went and had a peak a the small museum in The Nelson Monument. Overall my visit to Carlton Hill / The Nelson Monument was outstanding and we’ll recommended if your visiting Edinburgh.

The view of the city is incredible but the monument was surrounded by construction sites, which didn't look very nice

Worth the 5 pounds. The view of the city is beautiful. It's like Arthur's seat but with less climbing.

The best view of Edinburgh! Well worth the £5 entrance. Credit card accepted. Grab the guidebook at the entrance if you are interested in reading more about what you see up there. Otherwise there are also mounted pictures around the rooftop showing the names of significant landmarks. The stair is narrow at the top and you have to squeeze through a narrow door to get out to the roof. When you are at the foot of the tower, look for the black time ball on the top of the tower (you can see it from the rooftop). It's raised everyday at 12:45 and dropped at 13:00, or so I've heard, yet have to see it myself. There is a free small museum in the tower.

Excellent place to get great views and vistas of the city. Getting to the top of the hill is a bit of a challenge but it's very much worth it. Getting to the top of the monument is a pretty steep, tight climb also £5 fo admittince which is pretty cheap for what you get. Also extremely tight door to get to the view i.e. carrying a backpack through is difficult. The views in particular for this area are great, you really get to see the whole city from up there. Just be mindful of the wind as it could very easily blow your hat or cellphone away if you aren't mindful of it.

Good views from the top after climbing the spiral staircase. Quite windy.

This place have really nice view, from tower and also from the mountain hill, but it's not the best possible place for full view of Beautiful Edinburgh! Best places are two large hills o posit to it. From one of them you can see everything but is a little tricky to get on the top of it. I'm waiting for that moment when I will move to Edinburgh from Nottingham to stay there! I love this City and place!

If you want to have a really nice view of Edinburgh, you should pay the 5£ to go to the top of this tower. It's really nice, great pictures can be taken from up there. You can get to Calton Hill in one of those hop on hop off buses or bay walking from The Canon gate kirk or the Holyrood palace. Worth the visit
