Summerhall is an arts complex and events venue in Edinburgh, Scotland. Formerly home to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies of the University of Edinburgh, it is now a major Edinburgh Festival Fringe visual and performing arts venue. It also hosts events for the Edinburgh Science Festival and Edinburgh International Magic Festival and provides a home for arts practitioners year round; its many rooms are used for art exhibitions, drama and music performances, libraries, small museums, educational & research programmes, artist studios, arts organisation offices, and workshops.
Early records show the Summerhall site being used by a family run brewery, which was established in the 1710s. All that remains of this brewery are a well and stone rubble sandstone boundary wall. Terraced houses and shops occupied the site for many years, until they made way for the purpose-built Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, when it moved from Clyde Street in the north of the city.

Great tour. Jenny is awesome and gin is amazing!

Jen was our host for the tour. Wow she was brilliant and is a real asset for Pickerings. She gave the most enthusiastic, informative, fun and polished talk I have ever known. Oh the gin is really good too. This was a superb experience and gets top marks for things to do in Edinburgh. It's really popular so book early. Located in the former university veterinary school, now an arts centre called Summerhall and really interesting too. Well done Jen (Gin).

Went to Pickering's for their tour. Beautiful little distillery, starting their tour at the bar with a Gin and Tonic of course. This one's included as well as 3 shots of different gin flavours. Jenny was a lovely guide, told us about the history of gin, showed different botanicals and told stories about the owners of Pickering's. Because the whole process of making and bottling is located in two rooms, it was more a standing together than walking around. But that was totally fine. Thanks to Pickering's Gin and the Royal Dick Bar at Summerhall for this nice evening.

Thank you Victoria for a light hearted informative trip through the history of gin distilling. Particularly enjoyed the tasting at the end. Definitely worth a visit hopefully be back soon.

A great tour discovering the unlikely story behind this booming Gin hit. I had a great tasting experience and gained a newfound appreciation for Gin and the different varieties and ways to drink it. The staff are really approachable, and you can buy their Gin's on premise or online. Best get in line though if you want a shot at their christmas gin baubles.
