Arnot Art Museum, opened 1913, is a municipal art museum located at 235 Lake Street in Elmira, New York. Its permanent collection includes 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century European paintings; and 19th- and 20th-century American art. Its 21st-century collection focuses on contemporary representational art. The building is a contributing property in the Elmira Civic Historic District.
The museum was founded by banker Matthias Hallenback Arnot (1833 - 1910), who bequeathed to the City of Elmira his art collection and the building that housed it. The original Greek-Revival mansion was built in 1833 by his father, John Arnot, Sr. Matthias built the picture gallery addition in the 1890s, which featured extensive gas lighting and a large skylight. It is a rare example of a 19th-century private picture gallery that retains its original art collection.
Very well done. Liked the visit at the museum.

The Arnot Art Museum is a world-class institution of fine art located at 235 Lake Street in Elmira, New York, and open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am - 5pm. A landmark in downtown Elmira, the Museum is housed in the 1833 neo-classical mansion of John Arnot. His son, Matthias H. Arnot, added a Picture Gallery in the 1880’s and bequeathed his home and collection in 1910 to become the Arnot Art Museum, which opened to the public three years later. The Museum displays a permanent collection of seventeenth- to nineteenth-century European paintings, nineteenth- and twentieth-century American art and collections of Asian and Egyptian artifacts. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from museums around the world.

Attractive, smaller, but historic art museum featuring a permanent salon-style display of works from their founder's collection in the original Victorian era gallery. They also have spaces on two floors devoted to changing exhibitions of largely 20th century representional art, with a few Asian items in one small area as well. A few books are for sale, but they don't have a gift shop or cafe.
