Gateshead () is a large town in North East England on the southern bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, to which it is joined by seven bridges. Gateshead is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. The town is famous for art and architecture such as the Millennium Bridge, The Sage, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. In the 2011 Census, the population of Gateshead was recorded as 120,046.
Historically part of County Durham, the town now falls within the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear.
