The Generalife (Spanish pronunciation: [xe.ne.ɾa.ˈli.fe]; Arabic: جَنَّة الْعَرِيف, romanized: Jannat al-‘Arīf) was a summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid rulers of the Emirate of Granada in Al-Andalus. It is located directly east of and uphill from the Alhambra palace complex in Granada, Spain.
The most commonly cited etymology for the name "Generalife" is that it derives from jannat al-‘arīf (Arabic: جَنَّة الْعَرِيف) which may variously mean "Garden of the Architect", "Garden of the Artist", "Garden of the Gnostic", or even "Garden of the Flautist". According to Robert Irwin, however, this traditional etymology is unlikely and the true origin of the name is not clearly known. An earlier version of the name recorded in the 16th century by Marmol was Ginalarife, which J.D. Latham suggests is evidence that the first word was originally jinan (Arabic: جِنَاْن; a plural version derived from the same root), not jannat.
Went in January, the weather was cold. The place was still beautiful and peaceful. Really enjoyed the visit. Make sure during peak periods you buy your ticket online.

Gorgeous palace. Tour is very well structured, audio guide is well worth getting for it. Kept in amazing condition with some incredible views. Well worth going to!

It is a beautiful part of the Alhambra visit, but try to come early. The crowds in the afternoon can really affect your visit. Since there aren't ticket times, you may have to queue to get in here. Worth the visit for sure, especially the "water stairs" section

Incredible garden with beautiful, well-maintained trees and great view. It was a little walk from the Nasrid Palace and Palace of the Lion but it's lovely indeed

The Alhambra palace is an amazing place to visit. Full of history and amazing architecture. I visited in September, the weather was great and the amount of tourists wasn't that high either. The only unfortunate thing about the palace is the history of what it once was and what it is now.

Very nice Arab palacio in Europa. Beautiful garden and view from here to see the city. If it is spring or fall and winter to visit here, we must wear more clothes. The temperature here is relatively low.

At the end of the Alhambra visit you will be tired but the Generalife is a best ending point so visit it in any case! The garden is free but there must be a ticket to visit the Generalife palace. The palace is not so big so you don't need so many time to look around but it is lovely. The garden is huge and in summer it's a good place to relax (in spring it was "only" nice). The main entrance is not too far from Generalife so we can easily leave the complex.

If you're not too tired after the Alhambra it would be worth popping over here - at least wander the gardens and admire views overlooking the city...if you're not bored by now of them. 😉

It’s pretty rad, just don’t call it “general life” unless you want to upset some Spaniards

Visit of the gardens was incredible! Lots of fountains and flowers. Visit of the fortress was awesome too.

Awesome garden with tons of flowers. Many of them with an intense and beautiful scent.

Amazing views of the Alhambra gardens with great places to take pictures of the whole city of Granada. Worth visiting at both day and night as the scene changes completely, and the wildlife that appears is different at separate times of the day. Would recommend to anyone visiting Granada.

OMG this place was beautiful. Great view of Alhambra, really nice walking paths through the gardens, fresh air, cool tree tunnel thingies... If I was an artist or a writer or a poet, I'd absolutely go there for inspiration.

It was very pretty however, the crowds were something else. And in June the heat was oppressive. Should I do this again I will come in early spring or late fall.
