The Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología (MUNAE; National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology) is a national museum of Guatemala, dedicated to the conservation of archaeological and ethnological artifacts and research into Guatemala's history and cultural heritage. The museum is located in Guatemala City, at Finca La Aurora.
First created by a governmental decree on 30 June 1898, the institution and collections of MUNAE relocated premises several times subsequently, until they were established in its present building in 1946. The museum has some 3000 square meters of exhibition space, and 1500 sq.m. devoted to restorative and research purposes. MUNAE's collections amount to some 20 thousand archaeological artifacts and 5 thousand ethnological items.

Great museum on the Mayan (and earlier) archaeology of Guatemala. The exhibits are world class and arranged in chronological order. Most of the interpretative signage has an English translation in addition to the Spanish text. There are lots of small portable items dominated by ceramic vessels as well as jade artifacts and obsidian blades and blade cores. A wooden temple lintel from Tikal is present. The scaled model of Tikal is quite helpful for understanding the immense scale of that site. The museum’s open courtyard has Mayan stelae arranged around the outside edge. A number of the stelae are from major sites that remain largely inaccessible to tourists. They were brought to the museum for protection by the Institute of Anthropology and History (IDAEH). For example IDEAH retrieved 19 stelae from Naranjo in 1972-1973. This acquisition was fortuitous because Naranjo underwent systematic looting in the 1990s. Enjoyed seeing the reconstructed carved stone bench-like throne from Piedras Negras. The Guatemala National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is excellent and highly recommended. Whether your stay for an hour or all day this museum is a must see attraction in Guatemala City. One tip - we took a taxi back and forth between the hotel and museum.

This museum gives an account of the Mayans, possibly somewhat through the eyes of the Spanish. The sections are organized chronologically from the earliest days through today. If you are interested in Mayan history, this is certainly worth a stop. Do not be surprised if you notice an unevenness in the quality and presentation through the different areas, as some were prepared with the help of US universities, and some done locally. The best sections are almost Smithsonian quality, but others disappoint. It helps if you read Spanish, or have Google Translate handy. Many sections are bilingual, but some are not. We noticed none are in the native Mayan languages. Some displays are well documented, but others, such as the effigy of San Simon, are not.

Charges foreigners 60 quesales vs. 5 locals. Similar charges at three other museums on this site. Small and poorly mainted. Still I don't regret I visited it.

Great artifacts and exhibits, although hard to see everything as most lights were off in the galleries. I loved the courtyard lined with carvings and stela.

Different prices for locals & foreigners. Explanations of artefacts in Spanish & English. Lots of ceramics, great model of Tikhal. What's missing is evidence of Maya Warfare & sacrificial practices which are topics that are popular. Nothing interactive, just look but don't touch.

Nice quiet museum. Please bring cash as they don't accept credit cards.
