Known as Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace of Culture) also known colloquially as "Palacio Verde", it is identified as Guatemala City's symbol in its architectural context. It was the most important building in Guatemala and was the headquarters of the President of Guatemala. The building is the origin of all the roads in the Republic and has a spot known as Kilometro Cero (Zero Kilometer). It is presently a museum and is also used for important acts of the government.
Since the beginning of Spanish colonization, a governmental seat was needed. In 1528, the first Government House was built in Santiago de Guatemala in the Valle de Almolonga. Then, in 1549, President Alonso López de Cerrato moved the "Audiencia de los Confines" from Gracias a Dios in Honduras to Santiago de Guatemala. In 1761 President Alonso Fernández de Heredia began the construction of a new seat, under the direction of Spanish Captain and engineer Luis Diez de Navarro.

This Palace used to house all Ministries early on, but today it's only home to the Ministry of Culture and Sports. It was built built a dictator and it shows in the lavish decor, and even the fact that all doors have his fingerprint on the door handle (see picture). It's truly worth getting a guided tour, so you can learn about the history of the place and some Guatemalan history. One of the central pieces of the palace is the sculpture that commemorates the signing of the peace treaty with the guerrilla, flanked by a permanent flame.

Historical, very rich in history and culture. Tours are generally in Spanish. Our tour guide Carlos plays the piano at the end of the tour. Close to Avenida 6 where it's safe to walk around. Lots of police.

If you can, you should go to see. When we participated in the tour, the guide taught me the origin of the buildings and the history so nicely. All the facilities are so interesting and beautiful. I hadn't expected that before I visited.
