Citadel Hill is a hill that is a National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Four fortifications have been constructed on Citadel Hill since the city was founded by the English in 1749, and were referred to as Fort George—but only the third fort (built between 1794 and 1800) was officially named Fort George. According to General Orders of October 20, 1798, it was named after King George III. The first two and the fourth and current fort, were officially called the Halifax Citadel. The last is a concrete star fort.
The Citadel is the fortified summit of Citadel Hill. The hill was first fortified in 1749, the year that Edward Cornwallis oversaw the development of the town of Halifax. Those fortifications were successively rebuilt to defend the town from various enemies. Construction and leveling have lowered the summit by ten to twelve metres. While never attacked, the Citadel was long the keystone to defence of the strategically important Halifax Harbour and its Royal Navy Dockyard.

Fascinating piece of Canadian history! Be sure to visit at the strike of noon, when they fire the cannon! Staff are immersed in character and even offered to take silly pictures with our kids! Sadly the military museum was closed when we visited but we enjoyed touring about the place.

Very interesting place to visit. Well kept and maintained. It's a quick visit, but well worth. The view would be better if not for the buildings around. It's interesting to think how it dominated the area around when it was built.

I had not visited in over 20 years but everything was exactly as I remember it. The history is incredible. The staff at the gatehouse directing people were very helpful and pleasant. Once inside there were plenty of staff in period clothing happy to help and direct. Signage for various sites, safety and for visiting were clearly marked and the grounds were very clean and well maintained. We had our dog with us and the staff were very respectful in advising when there was something coming up that may cause fright and how to manage it. This is something I recommend to anyone visiting Halifax and you should allow yourself at least a few hours to tour as there is plenty to see and experience. Not something you want to rush through.

If you want to enjoy a serious piece of Canadian history, do not miss visiting Citadel. It is rich with history from he mid to late 1700's, with friendly Staff walking the property and always ready to answer any questions you might have. It's a long walk up that hill, but it is definitely worth it.

Got to love our historic sites! Well organized tours at regular intervals during the summer. Have you heard an explosive sound? Odds are it's noon and the canon just fired... No worries!

You will spend hours here and enjoy every minute. When you see this place and think that this is how so many lived back in the day, your kids will freak! Very cool just to walk around everything, be sure to go up top to see how the defences were set up to protect. Maybe venture into the tunnel, scary! If you like history you will love it here. GO, I'd return time permitting. (Mega)

Halifax is full of history and this is one of the places that contributes to it. It has a great view of the city, has a large courtyard where you can walk around and get a feel of what life may have been like for soldiers defending the old city. Grab some food and come here to enjoy a sunny weekend morning.

If you have never been, this is a MUST! If history is your forte, then you will enjoy a full day here! The city views are fantastic! Inside the fort is amazing! Bring comfortable shoes as you will spend a lot of time walking! Parking is limited, wheelchair accessible.

Relive history with style.. The citadel is one of a kind historic place which shows you the might of British forces and the level of knowledge they possessed regarding building, warfare and strategy.. You can drive up-to the citadel gate and we got a free entry due to Canada’s 150th Anniversary

Love the ghost tours that happen there. Fun and they give the kids a couple of my. The site is well taken care of and the Army museum was very nice.

I think this site is well worth going to. There are pretty good displays of the region's and the site's history. There are plenty of people around to share more information. And the views from the citadel are fantastic. The only thing to be aware of is that tourist season seems to kick off in mid to late May, so when I went there was a lot of construction/maintenance and several of the exhibits were closed. One other thing to note: it gets really windy up there! Dress warmly and I wouldn't advise wearing a hat!

This is a very well-maintained historical site. The guides are very prepared and they give us every single detail of the regiment, uniform, weapons and history. Do go with a guide, really interesting. There’s a change of sentry at 10am. Check for other times. Don’t miss it. The bagpipe sounds beautiful. There’s also the flag ceremony. We also see real young cadets in training. Take lots of pictures with soldiers with different uniforms. A regret is we never made it to the gift shop. Will check it out next time.

Great experience. It was really cool to see such an important part of Canadian history. Lots to see throughout The Citadel, we checked out everything over the course of 2 hours would recommend closer to 3 hours for those that like to read up on everything.

It's a very interesting place to visit, everyone is dress depending on his roll in the Citadel. I was very happy because they know their history. I was able to talk with the teacher of the school, a soldier and a nurse (she looked like an angel). I was specially impressed by the man in the picture (He was a military) who was explaining the strategy used in war. The way he talks about the history make it feel like a story.

This is definitely a place to spend the day.. they have bagpipe players and people that play rolls just as it was back in the day where the fort was used. The view is beautiful when they do cut the grass back from the Hills. This place is good for all ages. If you have a Canadian park pass this is covered with no cost except for parking which cost us $3. 50 for the day.

Not a bad site. Very historic fort but yet very poor in the way of tours and people explaining the area. Very much a go on your own type of place. Had potential to be fantastic but is lacking in people and character compared to other forts across Canada. Still a must do in the Halifax area.

This was probably one of the coolest places I have been in a while. The tour guide staff were extremely knowledgeable of what they were talking about. I had a great experience here. There are plenty of recreated scenes and interesting museums and displays. If you are into the WWI or war stories, be sure to visit this place. Awesome and very cool information is available and it is definately an experience to share with your kids.

A pretty cool example if an Empire era fort. If you're in Halifax as a visitor you will probably see it, be taken to it, tour group to it. Is it worth the price of entry? Yes to either or of: you like history and want to see it OR you like history and want to see if preserved. If you're not that bothered, just look at it for free from the outside.
