I really liked the main exhibition. It showed a nice overview of art history from the middle ages all the way to the 60s. You were supposed to walk through the exhibition and see the art progress as time went by, but it was difficult to find your way around sometimes. The other exhibitions were hidden away in my opinion and I actually had a hard time finding them.

Huge variety of art. Good facilities well designed and the English tour is great.

I loved the old masters! This building is beautiful on the inside and out, though the staff is very matter-of-fact about their jobs. I didn't bother with the contemporary section, but the rest of the museum was lovely.

Spectacular collection of European paintings. Wander through the many rooms and sense the Zeitgeist of the different centuries.

Amazing collection of art. Reasonably priced entry tickets and well curated galleries. A must visit.

The classical art sections, in particular the one dedicated to German painters, are very well looked after, the excellence of Caspar David Friedrich takes your breath away. The separation between the classic and the contemporary is very suitable in the two buildings that reflect these two different collections.

Be ready for something special: an impressive collection of European and German paintings. Entrance fee is 14 Euro + extra 3 Euro for audio-guide. There is convenient cloakroom, café and museum shop. Number 1 on my Hamburg bucket list.

The museum is very nice but one of the ladies in the tickets sale has stolen 5 euros to me. I gave her 30 euros because our tickets cost 22 euros and she gave me 3 euros back. When I complained to her she said that I have given to her 25 euros, that was completely wrong. Then she said we could visit the museum and come back later after she checks the money in the cashier. My surprise was when we come back to the counter and she confirmed again that the cashier was ok and I was wrong. I felt totally upset and even my husband confirmed me that he saw the bills and there was one of 20 and one of 10. We cannot do anything more because it was our word against hers, but I write it here as advise to readers: be careful with the change when going there.

It's pretty amazing but it's recommended for people with some knowledge of German. It's pretty big so it's better to take some time to visit.

Great museum. No problem getting by in English. Laid out very cleverly, but don't miss the great contemporary art up at the top.

Great collection but some unfriendly staff. We all have our bad days maybe it was hers.

All around awesome art museum. Interesting by itself architecturally, the interior design is also very pleasing. Good selection of paintings and a few sculptures from different eras. The temporary exhibitions are also excellent most of the time. A must-visit for anyone with any interest in art!

You can go through the full history of art within 3-4 hours. Not the most famous artists and works but very nice collection. If you want to feel the art but not hunting for hype this is a good collection. The Caspar David Friedrich collection is amazing.

Simply a must see museum / attraction when you are visiting Hamburg! They have some works of important and well known European artists, but it's really a place to discover their German counterparts throughout the different periods of history.

Art museum located in 2 buildings with good collection of classics (incl some highlights like Munch, Caspar, Dali...) and usually a set of modern installations
