A splendid way to spend an afternoon in Hamburg city. The museum is easily accessible by public transport. There are buses and subway U4 that offers good connectivity. The museum is spread across nine floors (there is a 10th floor, which is used for hosting special functions. You can either start from floor nine or level zero. For more authenticity, the floors are called decks in the museum. The collection is par excellence with detailed explanation on many of the exhibits. (In fact, every exhibit has a detailed explanation but, most of it is only in German). There are detailed materials and collections from all aspects of the maritime affairs. (Trade, warfare and exploration). Deck 8 is dedicated for paintings related to sea faring. And deck 9 has diorama and model ships. One aspect which I noticed was that the museum is focused mostly on the European exploration and developments and not much has been mentioned about other seafaring cultures.

The museum was huge- it had 9 floors of exhibitions, which were packed with things. Some neat and well designed exhibits. I liked using the periscope! Ticket prices were a bit high at 13€ per adult, charging an extra 3.5€ for the audio guide. We did not rent them. I wish there had been more English panels. The major ones in each area were in both German and English, but the smaller panels for individual items were mostly not translated.

It is a maritime museum, so unsurprisingly they have A LOT of boats. Every single floor has boat miniatures, organized over themes (oil drilling, European colonization, war technology, submarines, and so on...). You can easily spend more than two hours in this museum.

Nice place to spend an afternoon. It was very big with a variety of things to explore. The ship simulator was interesting. There were a lot of model ships, but many of the same type.

One of the best museums l went to nine floors of old history it has also a eating place fantastic easy to find just down the road from the main shopping precinct in Hamburg this country would be number one on my world travels

A highly interesting exhibition that covers all imaginable aspects of seafaring and its peripheral disciplines. You should take your time to discover and study everything. The ship simulator alone is worth a visit. Certainly one of the museum highlights in Hamburg.

Most museums in Germany lack the interactive part, but there was so much missed potential here. It is very interesting and lots to learn but difficult with kids. Also there are virtually no sitting areas. I would go again with a much older child that can read themselves and when walking isn't such a problem.

Very nice to discover the historical facts about ships also very well organized. You should bring loads of stamina to climb the stairs as there are several floors:)

Fantastic collection of ships and nautical things! Some sections weren't in English but that doesn't warrant the loss of a star in my opinion. For the price, I'd say it is well worth it if you enjoy the wonderful world of ocean-going vessels!

Easily the best maritime museum I've been to and quite possibly the best in the world. For just €9.5, you can expect to spend pretty much half of your day in here admiring the beautiful displays! They've got great coffee too. One downside is that quite a handful of displays are only in German but most of the major ones are in English at least.

Nice little spot. The museum itself is not as impressive as I would have thought for a Harbour city of Hamburg. There few nice bars and restaurants on the outside and worth going if just for the food and drinks on offer. Nice area arroimd the museum although pretty much dead on Sundays.

Very Nice Museum, quite a rich collection displayed in 9 floors. You can easily enjoy 3 hours with Teen- kids in a typical rainy day of Hamburg. Strongly recommended even for none german speakers.

This museum has 10 floors, so be ready for outstanding journey! You will see really a lot of ship models. English is not everywhere, but you can find quiet a lot English descriptions.

I did not expect this museum to be as big and vast as it is. So that was a pleasant surprise. Lots of detailed model ships and model engines that have a little plaque next to them with information. The museum has a total of 9 floors that each have a different theme. My personal favorite was floor 9, where the museums model ship collection is located. Sadly a lot of the information is only written in German and only the bigger information boards have english under them but I believe there is an English spoken tour. The museums shop is also very large and has a large collection of tiny model ships and books for sale. But be warned as most of those are very expensive and not meant for kids. Overall a lovely museum to visit if you are in Hamburg and even for someone that doesn’t really understand the German language it is lots of fun!

Excellent museum if you want to have an overall idea of the history and evolution of navigation through history, there is also a painting exhibition worth to visit,... the building, displays and explanations are really interesting, the shop as well... Something that could be improved is the interactivity option

Many handcrafted modelled ships. The museum is very educative, a lot of information about the pieces in German and in English as well. The exhibition is spread over 9 floors. Recommended for middle aged kids to adults.
