Kopan Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery near Boudhanath, on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal. It is a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international network of Gelugpa dharma centers, and once served as its headquarters.
The monastery was established by the FPMT's founders, Lamas Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, who bought the property from Nepal's royal astrologer in 1969. Its name comes from the name of the hill on which it was built.

Oh what an incredible experience it is to visit this beautiful monastery. We were fortunate to visit when a puja (ceremony) was taking place. The temple was filled with monks and nuns chanting. The sound being played over loud speakers was just magical. We visited Kopan via an arranged tour which included spending a couple of hours with a senior monk. An added bonus was the view of Kathmandu Valley.

I stayed 1 month for the November Course retreat and it was one of the most amazing experience I've ever had. First, the place is gorgeous. It's higher than the city so the air is not pollutes there. The Stupa gardens are beautiful and colourful. I've met some of the most amazing and kindest people there! It's tge perfect place to forget about all of your worries and really focus on yourself in a meaningful way. I would definitely come back often if it wasn't so far from home.

This place is not open always as it used to be few years back, but it is opened for visitors in special occasion like Buddha jayanti, etc. It is very good place with lots of beautiful monument located at top of small hill very near to outskirt of Kathmandu valley.

Situated on a hill, Kopan Monastery overlooks Kathmandu valley. Here monks are extensively trained on philosophical subjects. It offers great views of Kathmandu valley. With lovely grounds and nice ambience, it is a perfect place for retreat. Even if you are not inclined towards spiritualism, you will love the place for the environment. You feel energized once you are here. You also get great food for a very reasonable rate.

One of the lesser known places in Kathmandu that let's you spend time with Monks, offer prayers, meditate and also enjoy delectable food at the cafe. Don't forget to buy postcards from the souvenir shop as well.

Overall was a great experience, great people, wonderful meditation sessions, comfortable facilities and friendly staff. Unfortunately, teachings were disappointing, they were very dull, repetitive and at time irrelevant to folks who are simply trying to improve themselves without seeking enlightenment, I honestly think there are much better places to learn about Buddhism than Kopan, which is a shame because they were doing their best. I would advise you to do your research before hand.
