Linderhof Palace (German: Schloss Linderhof) is a Schloss in Germany, in southwest Bavaria near the village of Ettal. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one which he lived to see completed.
Ludwig already knew the area around Linderhof from his youth when he had accompanied his father King Maximilian II of Bavaria on his hunting trips in the Bavarian Alps. When Ludwig II became King in 1864, he inherited the so-called Königshäuschen from his father, and in 1869 began enlarging the building. In 1874, he decided to tear down the Königshäuschen and rebuild it on its present-day location in the park. At the same time three new rooms and the staircase were added to the remaining U-shaped complex, and the previous wooden exterior was clad with stone façades. The building was designed in the style of the second rococo-period. Between 1863 and 1886, a total of 8,460,937 marks was spent constructing Linderhof.
Absolutely adore this small palace, just about the the size of a modest villa. The Bavarian King Ludwig II build this stunning hiding place a few hours outside Munich just for himself! I love the beautiful rooms all in different colors, the exquisite fabrics and gold decorations, the golden piano made on order by Ludwig for the composer Richard Wagner whom he had adored and the many other precious artifacts. This was a fantasy came true for King Ludwig. We experienced it all covered in beautiful deep white powder snow - a fantasy world.

This palace is beautiful inside and out, and has such an intimacy about it due to it's scale and location. It's no wonder this was the King's preferred palace. I would suggest visiting when the palace is not snowed under; while the palace is still accessible, the beautiful gardens cannot be enjoyed when covered in snow. It's a shame that the people maintaining these grounds don't do more to remove the snow to allow winter visitors to enjoy the gardens, as this would even further highlight the beauty of the palace.

April 8th is a little early to visit this castle. The fountains and most sculptures aren't uncovered and operating until mid April. But the crowds were low which was nice. And on a Sunday we even had our own 'private' English tour which was great!

Beautiful small castle full of ornaments. Entry is 7.5 EUR and it includes guided tour. Our tour guide was an older gentleman and was amazing. In 30min he shared both funny stories and many facts. Castle looks like small Versailles, and it has similar georgeous rooms. Really recommend!

Nice Ludwig castle. Not crowded. Very ornate. We visied in winter with lots of snow but the grounds seemed nice. I actually have not visited many castles and I'm not an expert. Nice tour.

Linderhof Palace is home to sprawling grounds and wonderful architecture! Should you want to explore the palace, there are guided tours that allow guests to visit rooms within and understand the grandeur and artistry put into the decor for King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The grounds are vast but can be tackled in 2 hours (not including the palace). There is a gift shop and other vendors where you can get souvenirs such as small music boxes and other trinkets. If you're visiting during the cold months make sure to bring a scarf and a jacket!

Very small for a palace but very beautiful. Built in Baroque style with lots of precious decorations. 24k Gold painted ceiling, ivory chandelier, secret doors, and the giant morror which gives the illusion of an endless hall as the Versailles palace in France. Oh, and an actual king bed made fit for a king unlike his other palaces. Best Ludwig's palace I have seen so far. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and explained every little details and he spoke very good English and French.

Another wonderful place to visit in Bavaria, the only castle that King Ludwig actually lived in before his death. It’s a lovely tour around this small but stunning Palace. The garden is beautiful. The Grotto is being repaired at the time of my visit, I believe they said it’ll be open in 2020, but still watch the video tour of it. Plenty of hiking and biking paths around as well.

There are a lot of improvements being done. Scaffolding obstructed some of the famous views and a few of the displays are closed for renovations until 2020(such as the Grotto). Otherwise delightful to see the fanciful and over the top decor. It really puts his other castles into perspective.

Tiny as far as castles go, but understandable since this was King Ludwig II's personal space. Our tour guide was a wonderful gentleman who gave my daughter the best advice when she asked how to get his job: Learn German and a few other languages...which she is now in the process of doing. Beautiful area, beautiful space, and wonderful tour.

Roughly a 45min-1hr drive from the nearest castle attraction, Linderhof Palace is probably the next, must-visit attraction if you are visiting the countryside of Munich. The palace grounds is beautifully designed with lush greenery and a magnificent garden patio. The visit to the exterior of the palace is free, however, should you intend to take a historical tour of the place, then you will need to purchase tickets at the gate. Overall, it is a very tranquil place to drop-by, however, sadly apparently Summer is a primary season when renovation works happens as well. So do manage your expectation as there might be some construction happening around that may obstruct your views.

Beautiful gardens and interior. Currently doing construction on backside of castle (7-9-18). Guided tour offered in English with interesting facts of inside the castle. Costs to park and tour. Several places to grab a bite to eat. You are able to walk around the outside without purchasing a tour ticket.

This palace is small but VERY lavish! The gardens are very beautiful filled with statues, Fountains and flowers! I recommend to go in the summer for this. Trails around the palace. Good view of the alps from afar from the routes. Only allowed in via paid tour, but this location is part of the 14 day ticket which we purchased at Neuschwanstein castle (also purchasable at the other sites included on the ticket). I highly recommend this ticket Not allowed to take pictures inside the palace, but the outside pictures will be hopefully good enough to satisfy the friends and family.

Probably my favourite castle to have visited in Germany, the tour guides are excellent and quite witty, the interior of the palace is honestly amazing given the age of the structure and the grounds as well as the auxiliary buildings, or objects as they were called by our guide, are just as astounding. Sadly, the Venus Grotto was closed during my visit for restoration, but my German friend assured me it would be worth a trip back just to see. Well done, King Ludwig II!

Paradise on earth ... beautiful parks adorned with hundreds of sculptures and smaller fountains. a large waterfall at the exit of the castle and at the entrance a huge fountain with golden figures. Very nice cave. The staff is very kind and ready to help. large parking with reasonable prices.
