The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) is a Roman Catholic church in Lisbon, Portugal. It was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere. The edifice served as the Society’s home church in Portugal for over 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from that country. After the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the church and its ancillary residence were given to the Lisbon Holy House of Mercy to replace their church and headquarters which had been destroyed. It remains a part of the Holy House of Mercy today, one of its many heritage buildings.
Very interesting ceiling and chapels for all kind of saints and so on. The holy relics near the altar are also interesting albeit a little spooky (bones, hands etc. in vats, skulls wrapped in cloth). In terms of art history it is probably very interesting too.
Beautiful little Church. You can pay a couple of Euros to go up the tower for the view. Very ornate.
Much better than the cathedral. And free to access. It's a mandatory visit. Rich and beautiful sacred art from the XVI and VXII centuries and a beautiful church that seems much simpler from the outside.
Climbing up the stairs from Rossio Square to Sao Roque is a bad idea unless you are looking for a good workout! "Breathtaking" stuff😅
There is a nice and small plaza outside the church. I'd have expected some more outdoor cafes to sit at. There was just one cafe with 8 outdoor tables to sit at. Meh.
A very beautiful church. It surely worth the visit. The museum is also very beautiful with lots of works of art.
Take advantage of the guided tours! Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Beautiful church full of treasures. Wonderfully preserved and restored. Super creepy reliquaries with visible body parts of dead people. The museum is worth the few € extra, as it holds the most precious and beautiful world of art. Also, the museum is much quieter and calm than the church. Cliff shop inside the museum. Very calm with interior courtyard.
Beautiful church which survived the earthquake and fire. The interior is a great piece of work.
I was not very prudent and got there when closed. So I had to mix with all the 20 yes old. Drunks. Night wasn't terrible. So...4 stars and this Church gets my Reverence!
