The Jerónimos Monastery or Hieronymites Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, IPA: [muʃˈtɐjɾu ðu(ʒ) ʒɨˈɾɔnimuʃ]) is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal. It became the necropolis of the Portuguese royal dynasty of Aviz in the 16th century but was secularized on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa.
The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the late Portuguese Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was erected in the early 1500s near the launch point of Vasco da Gama's first journey, and its construction funded by a tax on the profits of the yearly Portuguese India Armadas. In 1880, da Gama's remains and those of the poet Luís de Camões (who celebrated da Gama's first voyage in his 1572 epic poem, The Lusiad), were moved to new carved tombs in the nave of the monastery's church, only a few meters away from the tombs of the kings Manuel I and John III, whom da Gama had served. In 1983, the Jerónimos Monastery was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém.
Beautiful architecture and definitely a must-do when you're in Lisbon, but I found the price of 10 Euro a little bit too much, as inside there was not much to see. I don't think it's really worth to go inside if you're on a budget trip, it's already nice to see the building from the outside. You can go into the church for free though. If you want to go inside the monastery anyway, go there an hour before it closes (last admission is at 5), then there won't be any crowds and it's really quiet inside, it will have more of a sacral feeling.

Don't waste 10 Euro for getting inside the monastery. It's not worth it, there is not much to see, I spent barely 30 minutes there. The church area however (free entry) is spectacular. The locale itself is 5 stars, but I'm giving it 2 stars because of the steal it is to get into the monastery, which is not worth it at all.

Beautiful monastery with a Gothic architecture. The outer construction is indeed a spectacle to watch. Although does not have a great deal inside. Visiting the church is free but the rest of the parts are accessible only through an entry cost.
SACHIT VARMAFeb 1, 2018
We caught a brief glimpse of the structure as we it was windy and chilly at the same time. Grand old and majestic would be the words I would choose to describe the monastery. Easily reachable by car and ample parking available.

A must visit if you are in Belem. The Monetary is an excellent example of Manueline architecture and took almost 100 years to be completed. However, the time consumed wasn't just because of the sophistication involved but also for financial reasons. Nevertheless, the Monetary stands as a fine relic of the time when Portugal used to rule the sea and the trade through it. Entry to the Church is free and entry to the Monastery will cost around 6 euros.

Amazing place. Loved visiting every part of it. Close to few other major sightseeing attractions by the sea, it is a nice to finish with as when you are done you can have some sweets close to the tram in that famous place and then take the old tram which will take you directly to the old city. Lovely ride from the side of the monastery. The monasteries is rich in architecture and history. You might need at least an hour to go through it all. I advice you to buy the monuments pass this way you can pass the lines or buy your tickets online.

Gorgeous place! Definitely on my Europe's top 10. The venue is cozy, antique, lots of history. A must must in Lisbon either for locals and tourists. Beautiful decoration, garden. Expect a long line but worth it. The entrance is 10€ and you can get it right there.
Monica RiveraMar 19, 2018
Wonderful monastery, very well maintained. Huge queues to get in and don't be fooled by the free on Sundays thing, that is basically if you are from around Lisbon, otherwise you will pay 10 euros each. Worth paying though, the cloisters are magnificent and the Church itself is amazing. Also they have a few thoughtful exhibitions which are very interesting and informative ..well worth a visit.

Beautiful from outside and more beautiful inside. It’s worthwhile to see after spending time in long line for buying ticket. I am happy that I stand and able to see it. Huge roofs and great example of engineering of that time. Monastery... must go there if you are in Lisbon

This is a beautiful example of Manueline architecture. I can't help but wonder at the magnificent ceiling and grandiose columns whenever I visit here. It's a recommended stop for anyone in Lisbon as it is nearby several other must-see attractions. It might be a little crowded during the day, but if you do want to attend mass it is a good choice.
Antonio TavaresMar 31, 2018
Went here around 11-12 and the queue line was very long. Somebody advised us to go buy the tickets from the museum instead and indeed it was much faster. The monastery is a very beautiful place with intricate details. It's a pretty nice place to simply walk around and reflect. Although, it would be nicer to do this if there were less people.
Isabel TecsonApr 28, 2018
A very beautiful building. Absolutely astonishing from the outside. The whole stone carving and the level of detail, crossed with the age of when it was done it's mind blowing, but the admission, and the mess of the ticketing system and the constant abuse of gypsies and thieves swarming around the crowd made it a bit less appealing. It was a long queue, over 1h 30 min to wait just to get there and then to visit was under 10 minutes worth of things. The Lisbon card helped making the cost free. But still there was no way to skip the line and the cashier is only a 2 man office making it extra slow. Overall, if you have patience...the inside is breath taking. I loved looking at the details and the space. Looks like a level from Assasing Creed.

Top attraction in Lisbon. Always long ticket lines. Try to get your ticket online. I couldn't connect with the official website so missed the interior visit. The outside is beautiful and also the free access church right next to the ticket office. So don't be mislead by the long lines. Go to the entrance and you'll find, on the right, the free church access. Skip the sacristy. Charging € 1.50 to visit one room. Not worth it.
JR CastanedaApr 18, 2018
SKIP THE QUEUE: go to the museum next door and purchase a combo ticket for 12EUR, then come back to the monastery and walk directly to the front, show the guard your combo ticket, and viola, instant access! Makes for a great full day activity between both sites! I really enjoyed the rooms that explained the history of Portugal, the world, and this monastery all at the same time periods.
Kyle DApr 15, 2018
Beautiful architecture. But if I had to chose between the monastery or its associated church, I would choose the church. It's worth seeing the richly carved columns in the church alone. The stained glass windows are stunning and an added bonus. But buying a ticket into the monastery provides access to a second floor choir balcony from which you can view the church interior, too.
Mark LynchJun 3, 2018
First advice. Don't line up. Buy the ticket from a museum nearby so you skip the 1 hour line. Inside is so big and so beautiful. So much interesting information to discover and to learn. This monastery is one of the best I saw in my life. Absolutely beautiful and well preserved.
CAI GAN XIAN LucasMay 19, 2018
Worth visiting but make sure you get there before 3pm as they stop selling combo tickets for the monastery and the belem tower at that point. Beautiful monastery which will take you about 45min to complete incl pictures. Beautiful details in the architecture everywhere and it is best not to be in a rush. The ceilings are exquisite and many rooms have a different ceiling design. The pillars have beautiful as well! Nearly each pillar has a different design! A must see.

Beautiful historical place of Lisboa! A must stop if you visiting. However, make sure you don't waste you time standing in the line to the right, but rather go to the left (entrance to the museum of Archeology) and buy tickets there, it will save you tons of time. The monastery is a masterpiece and church is beautiful! We enjoyed every minute and loved the display of 500 years of history in Portugal, Monastery and world.
Natalya GJun 12, 2018
Magnificent building, inside and out. Little fact: Vasco De Gama's tomb is in the church, which is the most beautiful part of the wonderful monastery. Expect long queues for tickets, however if you're reading this you're in luck: go to the nearby museum of archeology and there you can buy tickets to visit the monastery! No need to wait there.

Amazing place, and definitely worth a visit. Lonely Planet said it's free from 10-14:00 on Sundays, but that's only for Portuguese citizens (sign wasn't completely clear whether time and citizenship were separate qualifications). I certainly don't mind paying to see such an amazing place though. Standing in line when it's hot is not fun, so I'd recommend getting a fast pass if the cost difference isn't too much for you (maybe about €10 more I'm guessing). Those have to be printed, and I don't know where to get them other than online. I waited in the queue when it was less busy than usual, but would still have bought a speed pass of I could. If you're on a tight budget, I think visiting the church is free, and it is so beautiful that a visit there alone would have satisfied me. For the church, please do respect the requests to keep as silent as possible, avoid flash photography, etc. It is still a place of prayer. (I accidentally left auto flash on at the beginning, oops.) I recommend getting the ticket for the Tower of Belém at the same time. Although not a fast pass, it let me skip part of the queue there as they have a separate one for people who already have tickets.

Beautiful monastery full of history. Great place to take in rich architecture. Lines were a little long for tickets, but moved quickly. Wish there were more English placards explaining historical events and elements of the architecture around the grounds. Complimentary tour guides were offered but hard to find where we would meet up with one.

Absolutely stunning. The monastery is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. It resembles Portugals culture and atmosphere. You can carry out a lot of knowledge and some nice photos from there. I recommend visiting in the mornings because the ticket line gets huge later. You can visit the church for free and without waiting tho which is also very beautiful.

This Monastery is one of the many interesting places to visit whilst in Lisbon. I always take a Hopper bus tour when in Lisbon- not the cheapest way to see the city but I like the fact that you get on and off where or when you like. The building of the Monastery is over 500 years old and is very ornate in its external appearance.
Mike SAug 9, 2018
Simply beautiful! The expanse of the Monastery and its Gothic architecture that dates back more than 500 years ago is breathtaking. As a UNESCO world heritage site it is a must visit for us but the long queue was a complete turn off. We decided to but the combined tickets at Belém Tower as it had a shorter queue.

The building of the Monastery is over 500 years old and is very ornate in its external appearance.
